I notice lots of free "you pick it up" stuff for sale on Nextdoor - including a couple pianos one of which is a grand. So far no takers. I had a decent heavy sofa to get rid of and thought I might have to pay someone to haul it away - who wants used upholstered furniture that I admitted had been enjoyed by three cats. I decided I should put some price on it so it appeared to be a step above the free you haul it crap. No takers on Nextdoor but someone bought it on Craigslist within a day.

Sounds like someone might have to take a chain saw to that entertainment unit to get it out to the dump.

Might as well try, right? We gave away bunk beds and an ikea wardrobe that way. Not quite as big and unwanted as that sounds, but it worked for us. If it were me, I’d post free first and if it didn’t work then pay to have it hauled off.

If it isn't a truly hideous 70s style, it could work well in someone's basement playroom. I think it is always good to try to give things away before you send it to the landfill.

We have hired some of the junk haulers before. Some of the stuff was in great condition, but after the haulers threw it in the truck and piled it all in it was damaged, so it does make sense to try to recycle if possible.

Running, someday those will be in style again...

We recently broke our old 1980s microwave cart - the kind with the cheesy fake wood grain veneer. We tried to install new casters without the metal brackets the old ones had, and the MDF crumbled when it was moved. (Awww, too bad, I loved that thing! - not!) Anyway, I hauled it out to the curb and it disappeared overnight. Can't you just hear the hubby: honey, look what I found! It will be perfect in our kitchen!

There was a gravel pool pad in my backyard, no machinery could access the yard. I put it up on the local buy and sell as, "free fill if you haul it” and it was all gone in a week!

I was amazed at what curb shoppers picked up when we moved house three years ago. I know there are some who will do their best to resell unwanted items, even the old clunky dinosaurs that seem to have become obsolete. We moved our Hooker wall unit with us, though, and still enjoy it in our media room where it houses a 65" TV. I like having all of the drawers and doors in that thing to hide components and our blu-rays and CDs (yep, CDs; we still use them).

I'll admit to doing that myself with an old sofa - free if you come & get it. Much easier than making (and paying for) disposal arrangements (here you most generally transport stuff to the landfill yourself and pay by the pound - it's not expensive at all so for me it was the zero-effort part that was appealing - haha).

I've been sort of looking for a trashy old RV to fix up and there is a slidein truck camper that kept catching my eye--not just because it was free but because every few months the deal got sweeter. I think it got up to "free + $250" before the guy got fed up and managed to junk it.

I did want it, but you can't put those things on modern trucks without a lot of carpentry. Oh yeah, I also wanted to keep my spouse.

18 feet wide? That's a pretty big room and wall needed for that thing. Perhaps it's supposed to be 8 feet.

Anyway, all you have to do is put a new back on it and you have yourself a new storage unit. Paint it if you want, take the doors off, add new shelves and it's free.

DS aptly noted about upcoming move-out day at college: "The ad says 20.00 cash for my full bed, you move from upstairs room. I'll just wait, and then they'll PAY me 20.00 to move the bed out."

BL, no there's a picture and that sucker is indeed 18 feet wide.

Writersblock I didn't have time or motivation to figure out how to post the picture but this thing is beyond outdated. It's clearly made of fiberboard and as noted it is so enormous that many people couldn't use it if they wanted to.

Add on that it really truly is mid-70s style in all its outdated 40+ year old glory and I'm standing by my contention that this person's trash is not gonna be anybody's treasure ;).

I guess they figured they'd give people a change to see if they could be creative before having it go in the trash. I think that's a good thing to do. Doesn't sound like anyone is going to want this one though.

Things I thought I’d never give away, but did: very old mattresses, half full cans of paint, grass fertilizer. I posted a bunch of stuff free on Craigslist and my friend who was helping me get the mattresses outside struck up a conversation with a woman who had just bought her first house. My friend told her I had paint, etc that I was going to take to the hazardous waste drop off and the woman took almost all of it. I was amazed.

Does sound like this one won’t have any takers, but I admit I don’t bame them for trying.

Boy Robo I wish I could get rid of my rocks so easy. I tried Freecycle and got no takers . . . I have several "rock islands" at my house that I am really trying to reclaim as garden space . . . ugh, ugh, ugh.

Goodwill won't take the old style TV armoires.

I had two exterior doors hauled to the curb, and called the trash company to pick them up. One was rotten from years of weather exposure.

Lo and behold, a car drives up, two guys get out, and haul off both doors on the roof of their car.

Fine by me, I didn't have to pay the $50 the trash company was going to charge...

Thankfully we actually sold our 1990's huge entertainment unit (EU) on Craig's List, I was happy to see that someone else considered it useful and was willing to pay us for it. Do not really recall if there is any difference between a 70's and 90's entertainment unit. In the 70's my parents used antique dressers and book shelves to store the same type of items that our EU to stored in the 90s. The TV back then was a stand alone item. Our EU was custom for our previous house and did not work in our new home, while it "fit", it overwhelmed the space. In addition to our TV we used it to store books, blankets, media, boxes of old photographs and board games. It was very functional. We live in So Cal where basements basically non-existent so we try to get storage where we can, those same items other than the TV are now in the overstuffed closet in my office, liked the EU set-up better.

Agree that offering your used goods to others prior to sending them to a landfill is a good idea. A friend of mine sold the most ugly rickety table for $25. Thought for sure that thing would be in the landfill but some young guys were happy to have a cheap table for their place.

I’ve given away a lot of nice things, especially when we were getting ready to move and I didn’t want to be bothered trying to sell. I put all sorts of furniture and other stuff out on the front lawn with a free sign on them and they’d disappear in a half hour. Some things went on freecycle. A few weeks ago I put out a concrete yard sculpture of a coyote or fox, couldn’t tell, left here by the PO. An old couple with a walker with a seat on it were going by and popped that sucker on the seat and off they went down the road with it. I saw it in their front yard down the block last week. I don’t know how they lifted it, it had to weigh 75 lbs.

I too have given away plenty of things- and offer it on freecycle before putting it on the curb. Most things have been happily taken (heavy stuff too... I just say that it is heavy and will need someone to help remove). Even some small things that are totally good and usable just not wanted by me. I am always happy when some one actually can use these things. We had a very heavy oak dining table, an old sewing machine in cabinet, dressers, cribs, etc. I offered these on freecycle and most were gone in less than a week.

I am in the why not to give for free camp.

We donated the contents of our 4 bedroom beach house to a local Catholic Charities bc they would pick it up. The house sold in November and since the area was almost deserted that time of year (mostly occupied in summer) we could not have had a successful estate/garage sale. It was furnished in 2003 and sold in 2016 and our stuff was used mostly sporadically during summers. So it was in excellent condition. We were heartened to learn that our 7 excellent and well protected twin beds were going right away to a women’s shelter. Just another option.
