Bathroom remodel help

Current 20 year old bathroom has zero storage and a tub we only dust. Plan to gut the existing fixtures. We have been told we can move the toilet.

Would like to have a larger shower with with a bench seat, storage for towels, etc. Also larger vanity where existing vanity and toilet are. Don’t want two sinks, one is fine. Need ideas on designing shower and placement of toilet. Want shower that is easy to keep clean, and don’t want huge clear glass panels or tons of sludge gathering channels. Thinking we’re staying in this house well into our senior years, so accessibility should be a consideration. Thoughts?

Darn it, I fumbled my notepad and it posted my comment unfinished. I think the bases in the bottom photo are larger than your 30” ones, so there is more space from sink edge to tower side than yours will have. Elbows are important to consider when you move to full-depth towers next to sinks. Do your elbows ever go out to the sides when your face is over the sink or close to the mirror? With a 30” sink, you could bump against the tower sides. I am super myopic and have to be up near the glass to apply eye makeup, for instance, so I would need room for elbows. If you and your partner don’t get that close, and don’t splash water outside the sinks, you may find your set-up is practical. Others feel it is too close. Tower side wood can get wet. So be sure to measure how far sinks would be from the sides of the towers and if you like that. Another thing people find a problem with your proposed set-up is where to put the hand towels. Some lay them on the counter between sinks, others have a countertop towel holder or towel bars on the cabinet doors under the sinks. Be sure to figure that out before you decide on design. My guess is that the vanity would be longer if you keep your current closet. You have to decide if that matters to you.

Yes you need a professional plumber to fix the mess-that little accordion-looking pipe is definitely a handyman special. You mentioned the shower was extended-I’m almost afraid to ask...did the same handyman extend the shower?

Smaller windows above the water line,and a big shower. I have a 4 1/2 x 10 shower and I thought it was ridiculous (and to some it is) but I really like having my own area. .We have shower heads on each end with a rain head in the middle. If anything were to happen, it easily would accomodate a shower chair or an extra person if need be. We are in Florida so temperature and being chilly isnt a concern. I wouldnt dissuade you from building a big shower. You have to weigh whats important to you. I had the same size shower as you have in my last home, the larger shower is a game changer.

Thanks acm, my first time posting! I should have indicated the doorway (no windows. Adequate lighting also part of the new plan.) Currently electrical switches and plug in are located on the 1 ft 8-3/4 inch wall as you come in the door. Here is another version of the sketch with 28 inch door shown (swings right) and rough version of existing fixtures "x" marks current drains. Two contractors have told us moving the toilet is no problem - our crawl space is open - so plumbing is accessible.

I think there is plenty of potential here, but a kitchen and bath designer would be the way I went with this project.

Probably will get a design done. Has worked for me in the past. Thought I’d try Houzz contributors, as I have seen many a good idea exchanged here!

Agree with others on the bath designer, but here are some thoughts just to brainstorm. What's the length of the shower/tub wall, I can't quite read the numbers.

I'm thinking keep the toilet where it is and put a tall linen cabinet where the vanity is. Then new vanity where the tub is. Could trade off some of the vanity space for a bigger shower if you want. Give the toilet more breathing room than it has now though. NKBA recommendation is 18" from centerline to wall or other obstacle; code is 15".

Or this one. But not so keen on seeing the toilet right when you walk in the door :(

Thanks Caligirl5! These are configurations we are considering, but each has its drawbacks/advantages. (Shower/tub wall is 7 ft 9.5 inches.) Definitely want to go bigger shower (problem is door placement, would love a walk-in that wouldn't cause entire bathroom to get wet!) Placing the toilet by door opening is a hesitation, but bathroom is part of master BR suite and no one sees in that doorway. I liked your idea of placing the linen closet where the current vanity is, but will mean blocking current light switch and plug in and more electrical work for relocating on back wall. Also, opening the door on that cabinet with toilet so close, awkward?

What do you think of moving toilet to location by the door, installing a 58-1/2 inch vanity with a tall narrow cabinet on top of the vanity - to the right - above where toilet is now and sink & mirror to the left (which is where it is currently)? Picture kind of shows my idea. Still leaves the shower enclosure design as a problem...I know, I know, hire a designer!

I like your vanity idea. Why not just put the shower in the current tub space and the toilet in the current shower space.

You could do a wall between the shower and toilet (would make your shower slightly shorter). Definitely keep 36 space for the toilet.

Glass is not too bad to take care of if you squeegee after every use. Use a pivot door instead of sliding door. My son is putting a shower curtain on his rental, but I am concerned about water escaping a shower stall.

Think long and hard before you get rid of that tub. Why? Needs change. All you need is an injury where a soak in a hot tub would be helpful, for you to regret moving it. Also for re-sale value. Tubs are popular again. Yes, most want a gigantic free-standing one, but sometimes just having a tub can help.

Hi Karenseb, that’s definitely an option and possibly the best ... only consideration is doorway and shower entrance design.

Anglophilia, we have a tub in another bathroom, but personally have always disliked and seldom used one since I was a kid at home. Good possibility if we have an injury won’t be able to climb in and out of a tub. This one is going!
