Comments (13)Thanks Sue and asm. Ohiofem, you've made some interesting comments over time. I think Sue meant you could search for anything, including a user, because this formum doesn't yet have a "see all posts by user" function. It happened to me that I posted once some time after I started a certain plant, later lost the start date, unimportant at the moment, but then the plant became important and I was able to search and find the date here and confirm I had gotten a fresh tomato to eat from seed in under 100 days ;-) Seysonn, I agree but sometimes searching the whole site brings up stuff that is unrelated. I've never liked the search function and use Google's instead for here. Maybe it can be improved though which would be nice to be able to include/exclude terms for a more specific search. Example: Hillbilly pH Before you got everything with either, so tons of soil and hydroponics stuff showed up, but I only wanted to see if anyone said anything about the pH of the Hillbilly tomato pulp. Comments (2)In this forum - the one you want to search - at the top of the page before your initial post and next to the Houzz logo is a search box. Type in the topic you want to search.....as you type, the heading changes from a general Houzz search to the specific forum search (as well as various other options that drop down underneath). This had me puzzled for awhile also, until I figured it out by accident :-))...See Morewould someone share how to search previous topics on a rose
Comments (12)Good point rifis! Viruses do not have cell walls. I re-read the original discussion https://www.houzz.com/discussions/5720993/gall-on-new-rose#n=23 and found the use of alcohols discussed in there was around vegetative bacteria, not about viruses. In that application, absolute alcohol (doesn't contain water) has been shown to be less effective than the 70% counterpart for the reason I mentioned above. Not about viruses. So your question prompted me to look up on the use of diluted hypochlorites (active ingredient in household bleach) vs. alcohols. Here is a useful article from CDC I pulled out from my searches. https://www.cdc.gov/infectioncontrol/guidelines/disinfection/disinfection-methods/chemical.html The article gave detailed comparison on these biocides. Used as virucides, hypochlorites are more comprehensive and reliable than alcohols (60 - 90% concentration needed to be effective), because alcohols fail in certain cases which can be remedied by use of chlorine-based disinfectants. Regarding the OP's problem with getting rust on her clippers from the use of lysol spray, I found an article dated last year by Kansas State University stating the following, "Rose rosette is caused by a Emaravirus species. Transmission of the disease has been shown experimentally through grafting and is also thought to be spread by mites. Though KnockOut roses are resistant to many diseases, they are susceptible to this one. The disease can also be transmitted by pruning shears. Therefore, disinfect the shears when moving from one plant to another by using rubbing alcohol or a disinfectant such as Lysol. So it does seem the OP's problem with rust may be addressed by switching to using rubbing alcohol. Thanks rifis for asking this question! I would not have done this systematic search without it, and I certainly have benefited from it! :-) Edit to add the link to the K-State article. https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/info-center/common-pest-problems/common-pest-problem-new/Rose%20Rosette.pdf...See Moremama goose_gw zn6OH
