what could make these sheers more modern?
Comments (20)I like all these ideas!!! I like that sheers provide some daytime privacy while letting in light, and they are so simple and inexpensive, but they just don't offer much in the way of substance, which I feel like those corner windows require. atkillery9 -- I like the look of Roman shades, but I want to stop using mine for a couple reasons: 1 - most of the light comes through the top of the windows, which is blocked whether they are open or closed 2 - they are difficult to use because I think they are designed for outside mount and hung on a rod. Raising or lowering is a PITA because you have to reach behind the blind, pull it away from the window, then raise or lower with the cord, and manually lock it into place (but since I rarely lower them I figured it was okay, I think I bought them on clearance 8 years ago and we had to cut them down and do a few other things to make them fit ... they aren't even long enough for the windows they end about 2 or 3" short at the bottom). And, when I do let them down, then it's a big ordeal to raise them up to the same heights again due to having to manually lock them into place. When the blind fell down, I realized that I don't need these crazy jerry-rigged blinds in my life. I'm tired of fussing with them and I really want to let more light into the room. AnnieD -- Your idea would be great for a stationary window, but for mine both the bottom and top can be opened and I often open/shut. In fact, with the Roman shades off altogether it's much easier to open the top window! For now they are just stacked toward the corner, which I can live with. I like it better than when I had them tied together. When we re-do the room, I'm going to go with the idea to add some color with panels; I'll make some room-darkening panels for the window. At first I was thinking to outside-mount them over the sheers, but I guess I will make a decision about that once I start re-doing the room. I'll try to see if I can find inspiration pics online to help me decide. The main thing, for my DH, is that he wants to be able to darken the room sometimes. I don't think I would have come up with this on my own, it's been so helpful to post here, thank you!...See MoreLiving/Dining: Help making it more bright, coastal, and modern
Comments (19)aktillery9 Thanks for the color inspiration! I love the idea of adding in a fresh color (after all, my entire house can't be white, cream, and blue!), and green is an unexpected yet beautiful choice. (And thanks for including a picture-- it's such a great example of how dark, traditional furniture can be paired with the right items/colors to produce a fresh look! I'd definitely like to do something similar in my space!) suzyq53 Thanks for the feedback. Your comment made me realize that my plea for help might not have been clear-- I definitely don't want a casual beach bungalow look. Ultimately the rooms will be formal spaces, and I'm happy with a more formal, traditional-leaning look... but I do want it to have subtle coastal references, through texture, color, etc. I continue to hope that there's a way to bring "coastal" and "traditional" together in a unique, beautiful way. ARBA Studios I'm mulling over the idea of adding shiplap or something similar to the wall around the fireplace. You're right-- it's not a huge area, so I don't think that it would be a costly change, and it might be a nice way to pull the room from traditional to coastal. Thanks for the inspiration pic! ingrid_vc so. CA zone 9 I agree! BIG rugs are definitely the way to go. I think that once rugs are added, the room will feel much more inviting. And I agree, everything that's currently on/above the mantle needs to be changed, and the dining table is screaming for something beautiful in the center. celerygirl I'm on the hunt for a wicker tray similar to the one in your picture. I think that the texture will be a nice touch, and with the right decor pieces placed on top, I think that it will go a long way to pulling the room together. Please keep the feedback coming, everyone! And if you have specific ideas for items that would look great in my space, that would be much appreciated!...See MoreNice kitchen, but help make it more modern/less warm!
Comments (20)ok,,so,,I'm on a mac,,,go to preview,,click to enlarge pic,,,the click and copy on whatever you want to superimpose. hard to describe, easy to do! there are much better people who photoshop. I have slate tile in my kitchen and really like it. you want a gauged, black slate, or Montauk slate. (I think Lowes carries some slate tile). this has to be sealed prior to grouting (i use an enhancing, penetrating sealer. only seal the tops, not the sides or grout won't adhere). If you want that pattern, just search around for it. it's easy to find. the lancaster tile is from tilebar,,,they have other ivory tiles,,,will send you 5 samples for $5. also check online at Lowes/HD,,,sometimes they have decent off-white tiles. can't find that exact light again! home depot has this one (you want something with at least 150-200 watts of light) https://www.1800lighting Quoizel. If you really want a bargain,,go here http://www.lampsplusopenbox.com/close+to+ceiling+lights-category/search.htm check weekly, as it changes. I've ordered a few lights from here. this one is 200W and is 160 bucks. you just have to shop around. as for the pendants,, you can find some on here for $50 http://www.lampsplusopenbox.com/chandeliers-category/mini+pendant-type/search.htm...See MoreNeed ideas for quirky Mid-century modern exterior
Comments (9)I agree with Patricia that a flat roof is what this home is screaming for. If I were to do anything, and I would need a 3D rendition to know how it would work out on this home is a raised clerestory roof over the center main space of the home. Here is a street view of my parents home that had a multilevel flat roof (the lower portion over the LR is not visible here). The visible raised area is over the kitchen and our kitchen was always bathed in natural sunlight even though it was in the center of the home. I found these photos from a renovation where they restored the same type of secondary raised flat roof. Outside Inside You would not get useful attic space, but that is not much of a loss. I have a crawlspace attic in my current home with a low slung roof and have only accessed it for electrical work. Had one in my last home as well - tried storing a few things up there, but if it was used seldom enough to make storage in that space a reasonable option, I didn't use it often enough to keep it. The only thing I kept up there was a few boxes of Christmas ornaments. The tree and larger boxes or heavy boxes were too awkward to get up there, so they got stored in the garage....See Moreaaron598
