Need opinions and ideas on design options for small kitchen
Comments (27)Ok, so I just re-measured to be sure. I should have pointed out that the 11' x 9' did not account for the hallway closet that intrudes on the space. So footballmom, you are right. Because of the closet, functionally I guess the room is a lot smaller, as the closet takes up space next to the dishwasher. So here are the more specific dimensions; - Long wall with range in the middle: 140" (currently about 54" to left of range and 56" to right) - Sink/pass-through wall (up to closet): 87" - Window wall: 115" - Wall where fridge is now (up to doorway): 60" Note that the window isn't centered, so there's only 23 3/4" on the right side of it, but 37 3/4" on the left. This is why the fridge sticks out beyond the window where it is. Part of the reason we were thinking of "regular-sized" appliances is resale. Not that we are planning on selling soon, but are trying to take into consideration what potential buyers would want. Also I wonder whether smaller appliances might actually make the room seem smaller by association? Maybe not I will definitely give the idea of a smaller fridge and DW some more thought. 3" of space next to the fridge is do-able. I think that this would only allow opening the door to 90 degrees -- I would be able to pull the right crisper drawer out enough to reach the contents completely, but not quite enough to remove the crisper drawer. I don't think this would bother me. Would it bother other people? Buehl, what do you think? The OTR is vented to the outside (that wall is an exterior wall). Jillypie, I don't think I would have room for a fridge where the D/W/ is now. Bmorepanic, we don't have a basement, just a crawlspace. We had toyed with the idea of moving the sink and making an opening through the passthrough, but it would probably be too costly. No heating in that closet, just a million coats and shoes and an electrical box. I'm interested in the idea of running cabs under the window, but then still have the problem of where to put the fridge. In one way, I do like the idea of the fridge on the range wall, as this would help to visually break up the cabinets on that wall - esp if we get a nice-looking ss one. Divamum, I very much appreciate your Sunday morning musings :) I agree that the kitchen should be a place to live rather than just cook. I'm thinking that maybe if we open up the pass-through wider as well as taller (ie above dishwasher), then maybe we could put a couple of bar stools up to the counter there. There's not a whole lot of space in the DR, but maybe just enough? Kitchenkelly, we are planning to go crazy with lighting too :) I really like the idea of pendant lights over the sink area. Definitely undercab lighting. Hmmm a sconce is an interesting idea maybe I can find a place to put one of those Seems like everyone is in agreement that cabs should all go to ceiling in this space and not be varied heights. Anybody disagree? A couple of KDs (I'm still deciding which KD to go with) have suggested leaving a gap at the top and putting lights up there to flood the ceiling with light and make the tops of the cabinets "glow". One of them had suggested having only the cabs above the range go to ceiling. What do you think of this idea? Thank you all so much! I will try to post some pics soon of different options. Meanwhile, please keep those ideas coming!...See MoreSmall master bathroom and closet design challenge, please help!
Comments (4)I just finished an addition to my twenties home. I tried everything to get a bath and closet with in a 13 x8 ft space but everything felt cramped and instead of having a tight closet and a tight bath with small shower and vanity we decided to add wardrobes to or large bath. I wanted custom but due to an unexpected health issue we scaled back budget and went with IKEA pax wardrobes they hold all of my most worn seasonal clothes and all of my husbands work clothes plus most worn casual wear. I like the reach in better for organization too. We still have the orginal reach in closet and a pine older armoire for extra items in the bedroom but never open it. Could you add wardrobes in the bedroom and have a nice sized bath with additional storage? I really love my large bath after years in this old house with tiny baths and closets. I was unconventional and like keeping my clothes in the bath which has two venting fans. it is my most private from the street area in my room so it is where I change anyway but the wardrobes take up so little space I could have placed them in the bedroom without losing much floor space too. in your second plan you can turn the vanity and make it longer and have the edge abut the shower with a half glass panel and than the door.......See Moresmall closet ideas
Comments (5)I saw some garage organizing shelving by Gladiator. Lowe’s etc carry it. I bought it and put it in to my 2 closets that are 48x24 each. I hope we like it. We’re not reorganized yet. The shelves, baskets, & hooks are moveable. The rails are fixed. I don’t know if DH will use all those hooks, but they came as a set, and are temporarily mounted on the rail. Baskets I believe hold 35 lbs. I can’t remember what the shelves hold....See MoreAny thoughts ideas or photos for small walk in closet?
Comments (10)If the door to your closet can be centered in the 8' wall, you'll find reaching everything easier. You could build a couple of corner cabinets (for your accessories -- hats, purses, etc.) with 16" deep side walls (two 8" vertical boards on each side w/thick plywood triangle shaped horizontal shelves between them). You'd attach the fixtures (stainless steel is much stronger than the plastic ones) that would hold your rods to the sides of the vertical boards. At least on the wider wall, use two rods, one hung high enough so that shirts can be hung on it and not touch the floor. The higher rod should be above the lower rod the same distance as from the floor to the lower rod. You may need to support the longer rods in the middle with a hold drilled through a vertical 2"x4" board. On the shorter side walls, you could add a floor to ceiling row or two of shoe shelves beside the corner cabinet and then either a single high rod or double rods between those shelves and the wall to the bedroom. However. If your closet door is in the 6' end, you're likely going to find out very quickly that you can only hang clothes on one side of that and accommodate only 1' deep shelving on the other side and walking sideways between the shelving and hanging rods is awkward … and you're going to need a really good closet light because the light from the bedroom will not be enough. If you only have a few dresses requiring a single high hung rod, you might consider investing in a wardrobe so you can make all your walk-in closet rods double rods....See Moreartistsharonva
