Small backyard in town, need some design help please
Comments (4)I would find a budget way to do a fence. You can almost certainly do it for what you're planning to spend on plants, and its advantages outweigh plants by a huge margin. A planter box would be no cheaper either. The plan of using plants has so many disadvantages that, until you'd said why you weren't considering a fence, there was just nothing to say about a way to do it well. A fence takes no space. Works for the purposes you intend. Has immediate effectiveness, and year-round effectiveness. Is no work to maintain. Can still have plants, which are easy to install after a fence is in, while a fence is harder to build once plants are in place. You can even do the fence in phases. Not that the plants won't be a phased approach too! But your fence can be effective while you phase it in. Seek out lumber in creative ways: craigslist free listings is a favourite. Cruise industrial alleys for pallets. But here's the thing: the bones of a fence need only be posts, and a few rails, which to start with could be just 1x2s or whatever you can locate. If you get the dog later, then you can invest in 2x4 rails and pickets, or panels. I think it would be a good investment to put in new posts; I don't think this would much exceed the cost of the plants you've proposed. Maybe a post hole digger would even be a good investment and affordable; I got one for only $70. If you ultimately want a tall fence, use tall posts (set the correct distance apart) - your fence can be short to start with. Comments (15)Don't worry about names, just put up a simple stand and see what happens. The veggie buying public comes in two flavors, those that travel to farm markets, etc. and those that grab going through produce at the local market. If youy're successful, then you can worry about permits, zoning, formal name, etc. Name is irrelevant, unless your stand is on wheels and you travel, repeat customers will come to your location and probably don't care what you call it. If you get big enough to worry about market recognition, that's another situation. Good luck,...See MoreSmall Boring Backyard Needs HELP
Comments (4)Chances are that many or most of the weeds are broadleaved weeds. The easiest way to separate them out of the lawn and eliminate them is to spray the whole lawn with a broadleaved weed killer. Weed-b-gone is one example. Follow mfg. directions carefully. If there are grassy weeds, you'll need to dig those out manually. Not sure where you're talking about placing stepping stones or what their purpose will serve. The yard already looks zen ... and kind of industrial as there are no landscape beds ... not even foundation planting or a single tree. I guess we don't like plants ...? ... which is the main reason the yard is "boring."...See MoreHelp with remodeling small backyard?
Comments (8)I have a small yard and created a sort of Zen garden. I laid out benderboard for a lawn with curves, added a dry winding streambed with rock, and used mulch for the rest of the area with flowering plants, stepping stones, and covered the fence in flowering vines. Use interesting freatures to draw the eye down to the ground and away from the neigboring house and fencing. Today I would have a fake lawn installed instead of sod. My yard is shown...some plants are covered for the freeze. The vines have grown on the cyclone fence since this photo. pavers are rubber pavers from Home Depot and are nice and soft underfoot. We don't have a back yard so the front is our play area and you can see the patio with seating and a green sunshade. Search Houzz for Zen garden and get lots of ideas. The great part is that this style can be achieved on any budget. The fern in the foreground is in the background next to the tree trunk in the second photo....See Morelibradesigneye
