Water line swimming pool tile

Is it possible to replace the water line tile in our pool without draining the pool? We purchased our home last year and drained the pool this winter so we could replace the water figuring the previous owners hadn't done it since they built the house 15 years ago. So we now have new water and a terrific salt system, BUT, the tile is stained from the previous owners. I hate the idea of wasting thousands of gallons of water so I'm hoping we can replace the water line tile without draining the pool again. Anyone have any knowledge in this area? I'd also love some advice on glass looking (not mosaic) pool tile that won't show a calcium stain at the waterline. Thanks!

The coping is a custom poured concrete form with bull nose. Davis concrete color of Sandstone. The coping took 6 weeks to get. One of the project delays. The reason for the custom coping is for the inground concrete vault at the south end for the automatic pool cover (you can see the forms set up in the photo) which is also a custom size for my pool. Tomorrow is concrete day for my pool deck - hope I don't get stood up again. :(

Here is a photo showing the tile going into the pool. You can see a bit of the original blue tile just under the new quartzite tile. Not sure how to cover that up... Here is a link that might be useful:

If they replaced the tile and the coping then you are right. The tile waterline should be near perfect level as they should have leveled the tile as they installed it then they should have come back and flaoted for the new coping. It sounds to me as if they just installed the new tile along the top of the bond beam thinking it might be level which in fact when they removed the old coping they also removed the old porland cement used to float for the original coping. I would definatly have they either fix this which in this case would mean retile and recope the pool again. Or as Mike said request some form of compensation. Good luck with this. And Happy New Year

Consider tile porousity and water absorption. Water absorption can cause freeze/thaw spalling issues, etc. When installing, use a full coverage of thinset behind the tile. No voids. Surface texture. Glazed tile would be considered more sanitary than a textured stone, there's less of a chance of floating debris collecting, drying, and creating a "scum line" at the water line. With all that written, I'm in New England, I have a tight-grained slate as my waterline tile. No issues over 15 years. Maintain your water quality and you'll be surprised how few issues you'll have with your pool. Clean and properly balanced water makes pool life easy. Good luck.
