Thank you for the encouraging replies, I have transplanted them and they should be fine for the coming winter and fresh blooming next spring. They really did need thinning out and were crowded. Thanks! =)

Daylilies are one of the toughest plants around. It's best to move them after they have finished blooming for the year, however, they can be moved at anytime! Dig them up, divide them if desired, and then plant them. Just make sure you keep their roots mulched and well watered for the rest of this summer. Most daylilies are not repeat bloomers. The small orange stella d'oro and its cousin the newer yellow d'oro will bloom continually. However, they always have a huge flush of blooms in midsummer and then will just send up much fewer flower stalks now and again the rest of the summer. I also recommend deadheading or at least just picking off the seed pods as they form. It helps keep that clump healthy. I love daylilies!

That's the best time to transplant and/or divide---when the leaves are still curled up! Go for it.

Yes, it would have been better to have evergreen shrubs at the ends with any deciduous kinds used being placed instead in the center. With a tree-like variety not being used at all, in this setting* - most Japanese maples including dwarf kinds register as trees structurally, when the leaves are off if at no other time. And when a Japanese maple fills a space and starts to encroach on access routes it can be a challenge to keep it pruned back in an attractive manner. Like all trees and shrubs including miniature kinds these always become a lot bigger over time than they were when first planted, when specimens in typical garden center sizes are purchased. *Trees register visually as accent points in the garden, with shrubs at corners of rectilinear buildings being best used instead to soften their angles rather than accent them
