very vigorous, hardy, pest free rose climber?
Comments (12)To do what you want to do with your father's fence, I am going to suggest once-blooming ramblers. They are the absolute best, in my opinion, for doing exactly what your father is wanting to accomplish. My Rambler Fence has Wichurana ramblers planted on it, the likes of Alberic Barbier, Francois Juranville, Aviateur Bleriot, Paul Transon, Jean Guichard, and others. The fence itself is a 4-board pasture fence with a strand of wire installed between the boards to fasten the roses to. Canes are trained horizontally and I get thousands of flowers each spring. After the roses finish their annual show of flowers, the foliage is healthy and shiny and makes a great background to the tea roses planted in front of the ramblers. Another class of ramblers to look at are the Hybrid setigeras, like Baltimore Belle, Arcata Pink Globe, Queen of the Prairies, etc. These are also healthy and vigorous, spring-blooming, and they are happiest trained horizontally and allowed to drape. During the growing season, my ramblers are extremely care free. I take any new basal canes they produce and I flip them over the fence. Every couple of years in late winter, when the roses are bare and I can see their struture really well, I thin out the oldest canes and tie the newest ones into their permanent positions. I do not spray fungicide on my ramblers, and I do not spray insecticide in the garden at all. In this area of blackspot hell, my ramblers are very resistant and look good all year long. There's a blog post I did last year that has pictures ... I'll put the link below. Comments (10)Post caps cost $10-$30 ea ($70-100 ea. for lighted). What's written in the contract? Who eats the extra charge if you go with post caps? And usually, it's easier to make the handrail system stronger by using a continuous cap rail. I'm not sure what your lumberyard guy was talking about. Common sense would dictate that a single continuous piece of wood (cap rail) would distribute side pressure better than individual 6' lengths of handrail. With wood railing systems, I usually use a continuous cap rail over the tops of the posts... but design choices are specified in the contract before I begin building. As to lovesummer's thought of wanting post caps on a cont. cap rail system, you can always add shorty posts on top of the continuous cap rail and fit the post caps on those. Align the shorty posts with the handrail posts and it will look like the post is coming up through the continuous cap rail. Mac...See MoreWhat Garage Door Opener are you going with?
Comments (6)In my opinion, Nexia gives you the best combination of original and compatible equipment (door locks, thermostats, cameras, etc), the best phone app (iPhone), the best availability and reliability (uptime), and the best features (automations, schedules, alerts, etc). That's what you get for $10/month. There are other home automation platforms (like Vera) that have no monthly fee, but which may lack in one or more of the other areas I listed. Everything in life is a trade-off. There are stand-alone doorbell cameras and apps (wink), cameras and thermostats (nest/dropcam, Honeywell), garage door controllers (MyQ), security systems (SimpliSafe), lighting, etc... Home automation connects all of that stuff together in a single platform. Example: a year ago, I got an alert that the temperature was 90 degrees at my vacation home. I remotely created a door code to let a service tech in. A couple of hours later the service tech used that code to enter the house, which caused several lights to turn on, and two different cameras started recording. I have a date time stamp of the visit, I know exactly what the service tech looks like, I know how long it took before the AC started working again, and I know the tech spent a silly amount of time sitting on my kitchen stool and doing something on his phone.
