How to vent a range hood in a kitchen remodel?

We are in the beginning stages of a large kitchen remodel. We will be getting all new cabinets and appliances and will be changing the shape of the existing island. The current range is a downdraft located in the island. I am wanting to move the existing opening in the kitchen over to the right and put an electric range plus a vent hood in the space where the walkthrough opening currently is. The refrigerator will also be relocated .My question is how would we vent this? There is a bedroom above the kitchen and a basement below. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Through the joists, parallel, in square duct.

Yes you are going to have to run a vent through the framing unless that is an exterior wall behind the hood. If you already know how the framing is laid out in that wall and in the ceiling, that is helpful. Otherwise you may have to open the wall before you can make a plan. If there is no room you make have to create a soffit for the duct.

Check with your local planning department. With 10" ducting, you definitely need a roof jack that doesn't constrict air flow. The standard Vent-A-Hood recommended roof jack is fairly low profile. It seems unlikely that it wouldn't comply with your local wind resistance standards. Are you sure it's not just your roofer's resistance to using something different from what he usually installs? It's a pretty sure bet that yours isn't the only house in Miami-Dade County with a 900 cfm Vent-A-Hood.

I agree with Weissman. I had a friend who had no duct at all. She hired an HVAC guy to install ductwork by opening her drywall, installing the 8" duct between the studs (or was it the joists?) (just barely fit, she told me), and cutting a hole to the outside, including the damper. While it sounds like a big deal, she told me that in the end, actually it wasn't. She was lucky to have an empty soffit above her cabinets, and also did not have a long distance to the outside, about 6'. She says she is so glad she did it. The cost (she was surprised it wasn't so much) and any aggravation are long forgotten, but meanwhile she will have years of enjoyment from cooking with her hood and good ductwork. Of course it depends on each home and its setup, but you could at least look into it.

We used a Tornado II by Zephyr. It's an insert that we built a hood around to fit my situation. I saved quite a bit of money by buying my insert directly from an ebay dealer that I bought almost all of my appliances from. (saving-u-money) is his eBay handle. I can provide more info if you want to compare prices. Here's a photo of my hood. Though not completed, you can see how a liner works. You can also download a PDF info from Zephyr that will give you a drawing, schematic, and other info that will show you exactly what you will need to do this. I love my hood. The photo online shows that they've redesigned it a bit. Mine actually looks like the Tornado III, but I know it was a II with 1,000 CFM. FWIW, I love my hood. It's a powerhouse and doesn't blow you out of the water. It's a solid whooshing sound, not whiney and tinney. My brother lives next door about 300' away. (We both have 1.5 acres.) He has called me before to ask, "When's dinner?" because he can smell what I'm cooking. My kitchen vent is away from his house, too. When I've told him that I'm not grilling and I'm cooking inside and not outside, he can't believe it. It has to be this powerful hood. Here is a link that might be useful: Tornado II

If there is enough space in the existing junction box (very likely), you can use it for a junction that has wiring going two ways out: one wire continuing on to the kitchen receptacles and one hard-wire to the range hood. However, the junction box must remain accessible (not hidden behind a cabinet), and the number of wires entering, exiting, and spliced in the box cannot exceed the "box fill" capacity. Most standard size boxes would be big enough to serve a junction for this circuit. I don't think there is a code requirement for a dedicated line to a range hood, although most folks do use a dedicated breaker if you have a combination hood/microwave because many of the new microwaves are much higher power. If I understand correctly, the range will be where the current doorway into the hall is now located, which is perpendicular to the window wall (I assume the sink is under the window). You should be able to duct to the left, to the exterior wall. If you are planning stacked cabinets, or cabinets to the ceiling, like the one over the fridge, the top cabinets on the range wall can house the ducting, or you can create a soffit on that wall.

Can you post a measured overhead drawing of your proposed layout, with all adjacent spaces labeled? Seeing a layout will help us make suggestions.

Thank you all for your replies. I don't have an official layout yet but hopefully my joists are running towards the kitchen window so we can run the venting up in there. I guess guess we will have to tear down some of the ceiling. Thank you all again for your responses!

You should be able to take cabs to the ceiling and run the ducts at the tops (behind doors) to the outside wall. Only ceiling I'd take down is the one over the island, bring it up even to the rest of the ceiling.
