exterior colors for little red MCM house
Comments (11)@winki9. Yes I think 'all trim' would be so nice. Yes windows and roof fascia, around door too. It will show the structural details and highlight the architecture of your home. I can't see the entry door, but it's also an option to add a 3rd complementary color. A bit of drama and will make more of a statement. I'm seeing it as a large top heavy, all one color, with a few windows trim detailed. Painting the rest of the trim, will bring it all together,...See MoreCalling all MCM enthusiasts! Comments (7)upon closer look of that stone, (which looks a bit manufactured to me) what is going on w/those mortar joints?? is there something stuck to them? Sorry, but that is manufactured rock. It's nothing special. If it was mine? I'd remove all of it. But if you're not up to that, then please make those 3D joint rope things go away. it makes the entire surface look unnatural. or, remove it and try painting the joint lines in a dark gray that matches the stone IF you don't want to paint them. I honestly would use Romabio natural lime wash on that stone to even out the color. (and make the joint lines look like this) Romabio also has a masonry paint you have tinted any color. go to their site for more info. another option is a heavy mortar wash I love the dark siding. Adding some natural wood elements with charcoal or black siding would look great....See MoreMCM ranch exterior reno advice needed!
Comments (2)one other idea but it would be major: I like the bricks for the walkway, but replacing the porch and the rounded part with wood would look better. I wonder if a concrete porch can be clad in wood (maybe that would cause a water issue) or if all that would need to be demoed first? also, I like your idea of cedar around the windows, but really, you could probably just get away with painting the white trim a dark color, like in the first photo I posted above. it would especially look good if you redid the porch in wood....See MoreMCM Exterior Update
Comments (9)Ranch and MCM - and for that matter split levels and he earlier priaire style etc. etc. are closely related fwiw so its quite ok to mix and match design elements so long as it all hangs together in a visually cohesive way. Often times houses are "mutts," anyway combining popular features of the day.... strong horizontal lines, "of the earth" materials, etc. Please hit pause and rethink painting perfectly good brick! The cream siding is OK - could be a stronger, beigier version but minor quibble. Its that dang stark WHITE thats the element that is the odd duck here. Getting rid of that will make the cream siding read as a white, but be more flattering of brick than stark white is. Get the stark white windows black like the others..... and maybe wood garage and entry doors with the money you save from not painting the brick? Or how bout those stylish black metal and glass garage doors (frosted glass if you dont want people seeing the mess in your garage LOL). The garage and front entry are the most prominent features of your house and that's where you should start your thinking process You talk about matching the interior style with exterior - well, one thing I like about the interior is the generous use of natural materials - wood, tile, metals, leather, etc. You have that on the outside - ie brick. So that would be another argument in keeping the brick natural and unpainted!...See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
