Site a Koi pond on concrete patio?
Comments (7)Fritzi, that was the general idea. Extending the screen around the pond seems to be the most reasonable way to go. A three foot deep pond sitting on top of the ground or cement is not going to be easy to look into. At most a pond that is 18 inches above ground or possibly 2 feet if you are seated fairly close will give you good viewing.Any higher and your view would be curtailed. But a pond that shallow raises problems if you want Koi. An article I read that made the 3 ft. minimum depth a rational decision discussed the need of such a potentially large fish for exercise. By restricting the depth the fish can dive at speed, you limit it's muscle development. I wish I had the article at hand but that was several years past and I don't remember what the publication was. Jennie must have read the same article(s). Her opinion on the retailer with the Koi in shallow pond is one I can agree with. The only pond builder of any stature near us has his display pond inside a greenhouse type retail building and it cannot be inground. The pond stands almost four feet high and has sides of stone for terracing. The falls are 6.5 feet above ground. The Koi love it and he often boards fish and plants over the winter. But you have to be right up against it to see the fish. At five feet tall, I have to lean right up against it to see all the way down. It needs a double bottom drain to reduce cleaning because it is so difficult to use a pond vac without a platform of some sort. That is why I think it is more reasonable to put the pond partly inground, off the side of your patio. Extending the screen around it to keep out the snakes seems the most pleasing and efficient solution unless you want to go with another type of fish....See MoreCan you use the water and waste from koi ponds?
Comments (8)Hello otis11 thanks for the feed back I have alot of boxes just sitting here now I can shred them and I needed browns bad anyway. As for the worms I have not tried to feed the fish worms because right now all the worms I have are precious to me. When I was hand digging the koi pond ( mind you its 1100 gallons) my small dog helped me he was thinking we were digging for worms and would eat every worm he could, I just thought it was cute then, now Im trying to discourage his digging for worms, I need them to help with my very clay soil, gosh I think If I put it in the oven I could make pottery, oh thats a whole nother hobby. But thanks again for responding. Deanna...See MoreWANTED: Books about water gardens and Koi ponds

Comments (2)you are looking at about 3000 gallons, plenty of room for koi, and a good depth too. a few pointers. 1) don't build the raised sideds out of wood. the pressure from the water over time will bow the wood and you will need to run a stringer across the top to hold the frame together. I would used cement blocks....much stronger and you can put slate, tile or stucco to hide the blocks. 2) I second the comment about a gravity fed bottom drain into a SC. Take it a step further and make it an aerated bottom drain. Best thing you can do for your pond IMO. 3) bowl the bottom of your pond so the deepest point is at the bottom drain. 4) for a GREAT DIY mechanical filter try a DIY Microscreen. its self cleaning and GREATLY improves them effectivness of your bio filter because it's not getting clogged with muck. 5) so much more, too much to typw out here....read read read. visit koi phen . com (remove spaces, this sight is blocked, not sure why, its one of the best koi sites on the net!) they have TONS of info on pond building and a lot of the big dogs in the industry (koi judges, pond contractors, breeders, etc) hang out there....See Moredesertmarsha
