Your house is fine! Tackle one thing at a time. You can do it!

I will say that it's tough to mix some of the colors that you are considering. Gray is a cool color, your floors, cabinets and trim and fireplace are all warm. It can be done but you need to add rugs, pillow prints, art or accessories that combine the colors.

TBH, it's easier to decorate if you pick a warm palette or cool palette and stick with it throughout the space. You can make a warm space look fresh and modern.

You are talking about a lot of changes and purchases. Do you have a hefty budget for all your house plans and new furniture?

If it were my house and I wasn't sure how to manage, I'd buy a pretty rug or two and live with the space a bit. You'll get a better idea of what you hate and need to change and what you can work with.

Gray wood floors or gray wood look floors have been trending out for a while - as has the overuse of gray and the room that resembles a black and white photo. If you love it, that does not matter, but the new design pics I am seeing have warm wood floors and much less gray and a return to warm tones.

Look at a painting of an ocean beach. Unless it is a picture of a storm at sea, the gray will be limited and many colors will be warm - and blue, according to my art teacher is often warm despite what many think.

Thank you guys! You're right colonialgp. It's a bit unfair of me to say that it's a mess. It's more how I feel at this point trying to figure out how to start, after realizing I don't know as much about it all as I thought I would.

I don't mind the floor, just have always wanted a grey wood floor. Plus the fireplace is grey rock, with slate seating. Also since the borders and door frames, and floor and kitchen don't match each other (the kitchen wood is very yellow, so is the lighting. The frames are walnut, and the floor is beige and tan, brown.)

I like the idea of a drift wood kind of thing. What I would really love to do, but can't find anything affordable, would be dark wood log furniture.
Before I was thinking of painting, I was trying to match a lot to the walnut border but there are so many options.

Instead of changing the floor, I could paint in the living room?
I like the example of the natural wood floor with the grey, but yeah it needs more other colors.

To me, this is already very beachy...including the light natural floors. If you do gray floors too, then you won't be able to put gray elsewhere without it looking like a dull cave.

If you're careful with this, it will look lovely...Are you bringing any furniture with you?

You might want to try a light silver gray or white with a gray undertone - or as you show a green blue in the above picture, a green gray or a sea glass. There is very little wood trim and you can paint that white. Get some large pieces of foam board and some sample jars of paint. Paint the foam boards and move them from place to place, looking at them in different lighting and times of the day. Take your time - many of these colors are very changeable.

What takes place in your home is more important then what it looks like. You have a nice place and just need to add some style to make it your own. Look through lots of pictures to get ideas. I like the blog "House of Turquoise" for homes with touches of greens and blues.

I'd paint every bit of that 90's fake oak baseboards and everything around the windows, a bright white. actually, for the baseboards I would remove what's there and replace w/simple 4.5" white mdf baseboards. you can replace all of the door trim too if you don't like it and don't want to bother with paint. rent a small table saw and learn how to do it yourself. it's easy and cheap that way.

the next thing I'd do is take down the wall w/the arches. if you want an enclosed dining area, then enclose it and take it to the ceiling. that 1990 half wall look, w/Spanish style arches, is just horrid.

get rid of the track lighting in the kitchen and have decent recessed lights installed. replace that dining light. (also easy to do yourself. learn how to do it and save yourself ($150 per light) . in the living room, please replace that fan w/more of modern type,

that corner stone fireplace,,what do you want to do with that? does it work? you can remove those stones without too much of an issue. even replacing it with simple tile, ship lap, or dry wall would be an improvement. again,,not that difficult. study on how to do it.

here are some beachy decor ideas to get you going

start w/whites, charcoal gray, soft blue grays, aqua or navy, and go from there.

I'd start with painting or replacing the honey oak trim around the white doors and if you are able to have one type of flooring that would be better. I would put the TV on the wall to the left of the fireplace so that way when you start to set up your seating is facing towards both the TV and fireplace. Also I would be careful not to get any bulky sofas in the space when you start accessorizing since you will need room to walk-through to the double doors. If you could float a sofa and have a small walkway against that back wall to the doors that would be nice. The gold hardware on the doors you might really want to change out. are you going with white for the kitchen cabinets?
