Furniture Design Dilemma living room

Help w design blue velvet sofa

Im totally starting over and my base is the Jonathan Adler Happy Chic blue velvet sofa And two of these pictures hanging over it. I want modern, bright design, thinking of getting white or cream accent chairs? I was thinking a dark Blue navy shag rug, blue or white curtains, and two white chairs, what about coffee table side table designs? White and chrome? I just want it new and glam! Any ideas are welcome!

And yet here is my room. With two cream sofas, and two blue velvet chairs. AND one Russian Blue cat. What?!? The sofas were Scotch Guarded and do not have any stains on them and the velvet chairs have proven to be extremely durable. Also should mention I have two other cats not shown. I just vacuum regularly and run the lint roller over the chairs as needed. Same as any other pet owner and the same as when I had furniture with other fabrics. We feel very comfortable in this room and it's definitely "livable " for us. We are in the market for a new coffee table and end tables as the OP is. Probably wood to bring some warmth.

We have to start renoing the upstairs by next summer so we will eventually be using that door. Also the nearest outlet is between the patterned chair and the sofa which is quite far from the tv as it is. We sat in there this afternoon and watched a movie with the kids. It was fine. The person in the patterned chair would either have to turn a little or turn the chair and they are light enough to not make it an issue. I'm hoping to find a small tv stand that is pretty close to the ground. I think it will be fine in the corner. Like k9arlene said, casters will make it easy to move it if I need to. I can't flip the furniture around because I have issues (phobias) regarding beam stability and even though we levelled the floor quite a bit, it still dips slightly toward the doors. It freaks me out even though logically I know it's fine. There's no way I'd be able to sit on the sofa with it so close to where I imagine the house will collapse from. The more furniture I put in, the more bare the walls look. I can't wait to start shopping for art! I want to thank everyone again for the input. It's been a really big help.

Mojomom, I read your other thread on you mountain home before I saw your design on this thread. With apologies to your husband, I prefer the version with the blue velvet sofa to the more conservative and rustic choices in your board in the other thread. I like the juxtaposition of the antler chandelier and rustic floor lamp against the elegance of the tufted velvet. And that the blue in the sofa picks up the blue in the rug. Annie, Blue. You don't really need anyone else to say that it's tasteful but cold (but I just did, didn't I?) Including the plants was a nice and appropriate way to break up the narrow palette, but it needs more. I think that doing something unexpected and vibrant with the artwork, rather than reinforcing the same colors, would change the feel of the whole space. Patrick, regarding the view out the window. In keeping with the film noir theme of my board, I wanted a winter view of snow on bare branches. I ended up finding a painting rather than a photo, and the painting is a bit stylized (could be a wood block print, but I'm not sure). The effect is a bit disconcerting. Jlc712. I think Patrick nailed this in his comment as the result of the 19th century world tour. It very much has the eclectic mix of "oriental" (from the Middle East to China) that was popular in Victorian interiors. Love the mix of blue/green/vermilion. I find the patterned chair a bit jarring, though--I can't put my finger on exactly why. I adore the green curtains.

I would now keep the rest of the blue to a minimum let the sofa be the star.I love the sofa but I have to tell you it will not stand up well to kids and pets no matter how well behaved . I would cover that sofa with a sheet for every day. I have all leather in my house for this exact reason it can take a beating so I would suggest at least white leather for the chairs and a rug that is multi colored

And yet you want a sofa that will show all of the dog slobber and fur. And WHITE chairs. What is wrong with that picture?

You can still do a blue and white room, and even a blue sofa. But get real about how you actually live rather than fantasizing that the dog never farts or that the kids never puke.

Look for a navy blue sofa from Crypton or Sunbrella fabrics. A blue and white washable more casual rug, white walls, and informal, maybe ticking stripe drapes. Something livable.

Hi Heather, Anytime someone says they want glam I think of Z Gallerie. They have so many inspiration pics of all the design elements that you describe. I believe they are doing 20% off in store and on the website through tommorrow as well. Don't mind the snarky comments. You can have both, a comfy family friendly space that is also an expression of your style.

I don't think a velvet sofa or white chairs are a good idea with kids and a dog unless this is supposed to be a "company" room instead of a room meant to be lived in.

Silk velvet is delicate but polyester blend velvet is extremely durable.

However, dark colors (especially velvet) will show dust and every bit of shmutz. I have black mohair love seat and chair and they have worn like iron but do need to be vacuumed often because they are such dust and lint catchers.

I'm currently redoing my living area and having a teal blue velvet sofa but I am using pattern material for the chairs.

bettyloo, thanks for the kind words. I wasn't going to post my actual room because it's hard to open yourself up to all the not so nice comments. I just wanted the OP to know that you can have velvet, light colored fabric and pets and the world will not end. :)

ishack17,,,i love your room! i have a velvet sofa/chaise but I do keep a throw on the sofa.

Heather, just keep the dog off the sofa and it will be fine.

think about doing an overdyed wool rug. I have one and it's very durable
