My daughter has a brown leather chesterfield in her study (hers is a more "reddish" brown) and we painted the walls a color very similar to Farrow & Ball's "Lichen" - we made it about a shade lighter. It looks wonderful with the brown chesterfield! She has an oriental rug on the floor, one club chair upholstered in the same green only a couple of shades lighter than the walls, and a small wing chair upholstered in a wonderful brown fabric that is a sort of "cut velvet" with persimmon/green/ flowers woven into the fabric. The room is very calm, and very warm and inviting.

My first thought is to make your family room the formal LR with that sofa and that fireplace they are great together. Then make the other space the T.V space with the T.V mounted at the proper height with the sofa facing the T.V instead of the layout you have where no one faces the T.V Get a great T.V console add acuple of really large chairs one on either side of the sofa a big square coffee table and some shelving , blues like you already have are wonderful with browns and then maybe add one more color.If you like the transitional look then something like this

The family room setup is absolutely perfect for us... the TV is comfortable viewable from the kitchen in that spot, and it gets watched quite a bit from the kitchen table. By the time we've transitioned to the family room for the evening, we usually crash on the two chesterfields there, making for the absolute perfect viewing angle.. We also chat a lot, have tea and snacks at that coffee table, play board games, and generally like to face each other more than the TV anyway. We couldn't be happier with the way it is and sincerely wouldn't change a thing! :)

Any ideas on furniture that would work with the dark leather chesterfield? Should I be looking for two patterned, lighter chairs? I can't seem to find examples of rooms with several dark pieces that I actually like, so any photos which incorporate a dark sofa with lighter furniture would be really great, if anyone comes across any.

Dark leather Chesterfields are bossy. I think spaces that have other strong balancing elements work best. I don't mean adding a bunch of heavy,ponderous stuff...but strong presence,saturated colour,texture,figured wood, the art (and frames),the rug etc. in balance with the Chesterfield. Now I know there are many rooms with a big black leather chesterfield sitting atop a cream rug with a bunch of pale and light chairs and glass topped,barely there tables. Rarely works,imo. Were I decorating with a dark leather Chesty as my starting point,I'd start with the rug.

It's a nice design but I think there's a lack of lighting in the room

There's a lot going on in this picture, but I'd like you just to look at the colours and see how a dark brown chesterfield and live in an airy environment. Ignore the ceilings which could only work in a very large space.

@hiccup4 What is your vision for the room? What is its purpose? Traffic pattern, future furniture layout? Is the actual room open to the other spaces? How light or dark is it? Any architectural features? Your space above is pretty and transitional in nature w/great light, is that the mood and colourway you want to carry through? Or maybe you want a departure? Your rug choice is informed by all these questions. Any one of which will set a tone for the overall room. Make a mood board. Put a lot of your detailed choices on it. And a budget for the room. Collect pictures of rooms you love (and hate) with big brown leather Chesterfields. Doing all that will actually prove helpful. Way more helpful than rugs I would choose without knowing.

edit: @hiccup4 Sorry I got you confused with the OP! Are you asking if that blue sofa on your sketchbook is a saturated colour? It is,just one with a lot of grey in it. (on my monitor)

I've done some googling and "Pinteresting" and am starting to get some ideas. Leaning toward patterns on the chairs, or a color of some sort to help balance out the darkness of the sofa. Glass table to lighten it up, and not sure on the rug colors yet... but at least there are ideas starting to brew. :)

We just had the house painted and have no art back on the walls. This is what the room used to look like with different rug, paint, and drapes.

hiccup4: If fuchsia went with my color scheme in the least, I'd have no trouble going for it - it works with the dark brown, and if the hubby wanted something so masculine that it takes a bright pink to balance it out, that's on him - not me. ;) This is a pretty setup, I like the colors together!

You can easily pair brown with other neutral colors, but also with blue. So it could go with beige, cream, white, black, and blue. These colors would be the easier options.
