Major Renovation - Heating and Cooling Options/Furnace Location

Mike S

Hi all -

We are considering doing a major renovation to our existing 28 year old home and are wondering what our options are for heating and cooling. The home is a 1600 square foot cape located 25 miles west of Boston that is currently heated with a 8 year old gas FHA furnace, and cooled with window units where necessary.

The addition we are considering is a 26x26 wing with a drive under garage, kitchen/great room above, and master suite above that.

The existing heating system is located in the basement, with the heat and return ducts running the length of the house.

When major additions are added with a drive under garage, and an additional furnace is needed, where are they typically located? How are the ducts run?
