Better boy tomatoes in hot weather
Comments (10)I see you got a couple of answers to your post of this question over on the Tomato Forum here. Some also suggested you check with the folks on the Florida Gardening forum as they can advise you specifically about timing in Florida. From what I have read in the past from Florida Gardeners, yes it is too late for planting now to beat the heat and the blossom drop that results. You have 2 tomato growing seasons down there - Fall and Winter to very Early Spring. As to container sizes, Better Boy is a very large indeterminate variety that can easily grow to 6-8 feet tall or taller and will need a very large container (7-10 gallons minimum is common) and good support. I linked a picture of an average plant below. Dave Here is a link that might be useful: Better boy tomato plant...See MoreBetter boy tomatos in hot weather
Comments (3)I live on the edge of California's central valley. We have several weeks of 100+ degree heat and up to 110. I havegrown Better Boys for the last three years and they do well if they get plenty of water. My problem is that they tend to split toward the end of the growing season. I suspect that this is due to uneven watering. I now have installed a drip system. I do think though that in this extreme heat they would need a sell established root system to survive. Also I think they would require gradual increasing exposure to the sun. The heat can be relentless. The heat here is very dry. I was only in Fl. once, but nearly croaked on the humidity. :-)...See MoreTomatoes/Hot Weather/Top Plants?
Comments (30)I'm on the western edge of Central Texas where we are hot and dry. I put my tomatoes on the west side of my house to protect from the wind (was awful last year and tomatoes did not produce). It is very hot on this side of the house until late in the day so put up tarps (requested shade cloth but DH bought tarps) which I believe helped to lower temps some. We have been 106 degrees for several days (forecast has us over 100 for a week or more) and over 90 for weeks but while I was watering this morning I was finding new fruit that is setting. I picked my first ever Black Krim which some said does very well in the heat. I'm watching closely for the first color on Yellow 1884 Pinkheart. I have a HUGE (ONE only) tomato on Thessaloniki Oxheart; could feed a crowd LOL! I have had a battle with spider mites...have had to take out some tomatoes in that row. DH brought home shade cloth today so will see if there is a difference. Good luck! Peggy...See MoreFlorida Hot Weather Tomatoes - Do they live up to their claims?
Comments (3)I gardened for many years in Charleston County SC Zone 8...By mid July tomatoes were done for because of the heat and humidity. Commercial growers usually shipped their tomatoes north from late May until early July. That is until most closed shop and sold to real estate developers. Some backyard gardeners start a Fall crop in early August. There have been seasons where I harvested tomatoes until Christmas..... Spend my Summers in the NC mountains where my garden starts later but usually get vegetables into early October....See Morecontainertime
