French Heritage Furniture
Comments (17)I made the mistake of buying two Passy night tables from FH's Maison collection. I had no idea that FH had decided to manufacture any of its collections in Indonesia nor that their quality had fallen to such depths. I have several exceptional French Heritage pieces that I purchased between 2003-2006 back when all of their collections were made in France and when their quality was amazing. The tables were delivered this afternoon - one day late - by Ward Trucking of High Point, NC. They arrived in boxes that were severely damaged and just piled on top of a wooden pallet in front of my garage. They rang the door bell and then vamoosed without waiting for my signature. It gets better. When I finally freed the tables from their packaging, I found that each table had a sheared off leg. One table didn't even have the broken leg in the box. Now let's talk quality. The single drawer has no dovetail joinery - just glued together There is also about a 1/4 inch inch gap on each side of the drawer. I had a contractor at the house when I opened the boxes and he looked underneath each table and said that the bottom piece had been stapled on and had plastic tabs holding it in place. I really can't imagine ordering ANY furniture from FH after this experience, regardless of collection. Who decided that it makes good business sense to debase your brand like that?...See MoreFabric choice ideas for Italian Provincial furniture, please
Comments (16)organic_smallhome and funkyart: Thanks for your input. I also like 5 and think it would look great with the SW Blonde paint strip and also with the rug I have now. I didn't look at stripes mainly because I knew that I would have to match the stripe lines on the top of the cushion and on the sides (they're 2 separate pieces of material). I am an experienced seamstress, so I know I could do that, but I was just trying to take the easy way out - LOL. Were you suggesting combining the floral and the stripes (half the chairs in one pattern and half in the other of something like that?) Also, what do you think about the piping? They piping "spices" up the bland fabric that's on there now, but with a deeper, richer patterned fabric, I wonder if the piping would just get lost. I can do piping, but don't want to bother if I don't think it will even be noticeable. This is fun. Please keep the comments coming!...See MoreCan French Provincial furniture be...black?
Comments (10)And thank YOU, franksmom, for starting this thread! I've been haunting craigslist since November looking for something to put at the back of my master bedroom closet with drawers or shelves and finally bought an upright FP dresser like the one you described. I hit a second-hand furniture store tucked away in the crazy part of town after seeing some of what they had on craigslist. Well, just ten feet inside the door was a FP dresser with the yellow stain for $120. I thought of this thread since I had never noticed that yellow stain with brown accent painting before. I wanted something for $50-80 but the guy came down to an even hundred and the dresser is Bassett and solid, also clean. I'd love to go black, but have a quart of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White already, so I'm doing it white now. White works better in a closet anyway. DH wanted some of the stacking drawers and shelves from a closet system, but I like having something that can move into another room or even another house if it needs to. Comments (4)Pick several stains close to the color you think you want, based on the color cards. Ignore the names, just look at the colors. Make a test swatch of each one, including the finish layers, on a sample of the wood you will be using. (you can use the underside of the top) Then you can evaluate them against the floor. Mixing colors works well - but TEST the mix to make sure it's what you want. I use "Red Mahogany", which is REALLY, REALLY RED, to warm up colors that are too brown. Use Red Mahogany in very small quantities. Ebony or Java can make something that is already brown darker or browner. Also use in small quantities. It's hard to do much with the yellowish shades, except make them reddish yellow, which is ORANGE. I stay away from them, unless I'm doing something with "golden oak" furniture. One of the best ways I've found to deepen a stain's color without affecting the red-brown axis much - but unpredictably - is to start with the vinegar and steel wool solution, then the oil-based stain over the top....See MoreAngela Zottolo Designs
