Question on Newly Purchased Knockout Rose
Comments (8)Blushing Knock Out is quite hardy. I have a number of them. What you have sounds like a typical body bagged rose bush. If the bush was stored and purchased indoors, the foliage will be tender and possibly would not survive freezing temps that could still occur in our zone. Foliage on packaged roses comes from nutrients and moisture stored in the canes. Quite often when planted in the sun this foliage will dry up and die. Once the plant begins to grow feeder roots it will replace that foliage if the plants is healthy and fresh enough. Remove the plant from the plastic and soak the bush for 24 hours in a bucket of water. If the existing foliage is very light green or yellowish it should be removed. Leaves require a lot of moisture and until those tiny feeder roots grow the only moisture available is that stored in the canes. Dormant buds on either side of the existing leaves will soon swell and replace those lost. When buying a packaged rose it best to choose one that's not leafed out or is just beginning to....See MoreLOCAL Nursery non selection!
Comments (23)I spend so much every spring ordering from a multitude of mailorder companies that I have no business checking out local nurseries....but I do anyways! It is hard to resist checking out the rose selection when I go there to get alfalfa meal and before I know it, another rose finds itself seat-belted into the back seat of my car. My total new rose total for this Spring is up to 66....and its still early. I have lucked out and found a few good finds here & there as I travel around. I have found Distant Drums, Champlain, Topaz Jewel, Morden Sunrise, Morden Fireglow, John Cabot, William Baffin, and a few others that actually do well here in NH. Of course I had to wade through dozens of pots of Knockouts to find them. I just shake my head looking at all the pots of hybrid teas that will likely die this winter. I grow some HT myself, but I know the effort it takes to winter them over and many people don't. I have my best luck at Agway (in different locations). Celeste...See MoreBlushing Knockout
Comments (3)Yes, "whatever works" is the theme of my garden! This area is always in partial shade (at best) because of our huge scarlet oak tree, and also 100 year old black walnut street trees. I have several old tea & china roses which bloom happily in this bed, but this is the first modern rose which has been able to cut it at all. Jackie...See MoreHAVE: What I Have & Want
