Please help with backsplash options - Thank you!
Comments (9)What are you planning for behind your cooktop or range? I think you could use enamel paint and caulk where the counter meets the wall. There's paint that can go over drywall tho make it handle wetness better. Or maybe put those sheets goods over for bathroom walls. Here are some other ideas. Alternatively, is there a way to have a natural break where the uppers end? This looks a bit weird, but maybe something similar? Look slike low backsplash all around and glass behind range. Maybe ask specifically how people handle L-shaped counters in kitchens when the wall continues into the room? There must be lots. I think most people just end either at the uppers or the bar....See MoreHow to make your own tile and back-splash (pic heavy)
Comments (25)I'm not sure how I came across this post, I think it was displayed on the right side and I clicked on it being intrigued by the tile making. I was at one time interested in working with papercrete and hypertufa. But after enlisting my brother, who wasn't as enthusiastic, and my niece, who poured cement down my laundry room sink, which original to the house had lasted 70 years, and ruining three blenders, my interest waned. True to form, if I come upon difficulty in a project, I think of it as a sign for me not to continue. And really, after all these years of trying various crafts that result in crap, I should know better. I also should have known better than to ask my brother, who always says it can't be done to any of my unique design ideas. And I should have known better than to ask my niece, who once stayed up all night before having to drive to LA for an art show, cutting mat after mat after measuring once, twice, sometimes ten times, but always coming out with the wrong size. I think we both have math dyslexia. I should video us trying anything crafty to see where we go wrong. I think both of us having ADHD might have something to do with it. Sorry for the backstory and run on sentences. So, I just wanted to see if you continued with your venture. And to say sorry for whatever tragedy occurred to cause you to have to move to Florida. Not that there is anything wrong with Florida, but it isn't Panama. Which is one of my favorite places in the western hemisphere. I hope no one is upset that I brought up a seven year old post....See MoreCountertop options with talavera/portuguese-style tile backsplash
Comments (8)Thanks for the responses. This is is such a great resource of info and opinions. ediblekitchen - it's not so much that we don't white, it's just not a super-modern clean white. i guess looking for some texture/patina. but do want polished/shiny/bright to lighten things up. If we were doing white cabinets, I would love a countertop that looks like the backsplash in this pic: http://bigcottage.com/houses/winchelsea-white-cabin/gallery/#jp-carousel-7777 jlc712 - i do like that, but yes, looking for brighter/whiter given the painted cabinets dlyanmom - thanks for the pics, it is always helpful to try to find inspiration like that. all of those are beautiful, but i did notice they all had much more solid backsplashes - white or grey. fori - i had never even heard of copper counters, thanks for giving me a new obsession! but they've got to be super-expensive and kind of high-maintenance right? i would love to see what green cabinets with copper countertops would look like, that would be awesome. eam44 - wouldn't soapstone be much matte-er? it's not very light or reflective right? and gets darker over time? i do love them with white cabinets though nosoccermom - these seem like good options (i've looked at silestone colors--and I sort of like Yukon, Lagoon, and would like Bianco River with more subtle veining perhaps; Mont Blanc is nice with specks of color, some blue that might hint at the cabs, but I haven't see a slab and I suspect it would be too busy with the painted cabs and patterned tile). I am going to try to see some of the CS samples somewhere. Other suggestions for something low-maintenance, light, reflective, with SOME subtle texture but not too busy?...See MoreKitchen Back-splash: Light or dark?
Comments (6)Agreeing with others, but want to add. Not only is backsplash choice last, but it also should not be chosen until after everything else is installed. Everything looks entirely different after it is installed, and if you choose your backsplash before that, you will make a mistake. Don't worry about not having your GC still available for the backsplash after everything else is installed. You will actually get a better backsplash installation if you hire a tile installer yourself. Remove the backsplash from the GC's scope of work, and hire someone yourself later to install it....See MoreJennifer Kirby
