The problem with cabinets over a pass-through or peninsula is not just the "view" when seated - it's also when standing. Most people are ripping out these cabinets when they remodel. To make it "user friendly", they have to be mounted high enough so the tallest person in your family (or among close friends/frequent visitors) can stand and look through the space w/o having to duck. If you try to talk to someone on the other side, you will also have to duck to talk to them. My advice: Don't do it! Oh, and I would make the counter all one height on both sides. If the counter will be 36" (counter-height) high on the kitchen side, make the entire counter 36" high so you have a large enough surface for that homework you mentioned and for extra workspace when needed for large projects. When counters are two levels, the usable surface depth on the higher level is usually too shallow to make it really usable for much more than leaning on arms or for placing a drink glass. If you plan for homework, I would want a surface at least 24" deep, maybe more. I know my kids take up more than 24" of depth when doing homework on our peninsula...closer to 30" or 36".

Unless it was pretty deep, I don't think I'd want to sit in front of a wall... Now, if you just plan to use it for staging food...maybe, but not for seating. How high will the counter be? How much overhang (clear space) are you planning? The most comfortable height for seating is table-height (30" high), but if you want it to match the height of the counters in your kitchen, then counter-height would be better (36" high). I don't recommend bar-height (42" high) as that's the least comfortable seating height and can even be difficult for both older and very young people to get into/out of. Minimum overhang recommendations: Table-height seating: 18" overhang Counter-height seating: 15" overhang Bar-height seating: 12" overhang Also, keep in mind you need 24" linear space per seat (so, for example, 48" would be needed for 2 seats)

So after following along and reading and reading all the good advice and then OP's responses I did myself wonder a couple times (with a few head slaps really????) - are you reading AND THINKING about the advice posted or just posting more "I am totally out of control help me right now" questions that seemed to not take into consideration any of the advice. It was more I have to have 10', I have to have it large, I have to have it.....HELP regardless of the solutions posted. I kind of started to wonder if you are a college student in design school trying to get someone to draw up a kicking design for your homework assignment and it was the 11th hour. But I am no design expert just a learner myself. If nothing else there are some good designs in this thread with lots of elements that many would enjoy (well maybe not the topiary IN the kitchen). Oh wait a minute - THE TOPIARY IS THE SHRINE! You are all set!
