Please explain longevity of perennials

Emily Saba

So, perennials only last a few years, right? Does this apply to all of them? Which ones last the longest given the best conditions? If not, what are the exceptions? Should I be propagating everything I have so that I won't need to purchase all new in a few years? Sorry for all the questions. I have alliums, sedums, daylilies, hostas, brunnera, bleeding heart, geranium, coneflower, nepeta walkers low, clematis, and phlox.
