Classic Gray vs Shoji White?

I'm feeling really torn about the paint color in our open concept downstairs.
I am a grey lover at heart and would love warm grey walls like classic gray. But we have mismatched red and beige tile, and oak cabinets. We plan to change all of those things out in a year or so, but I don't want it to look terrible in the meantime. We will be going with black lower cabinets, white uppers, and a dark wood toned tile.
Our dining table is grey with black chairs and our kitchen island is black. I'm in the process of setting up a sitting room with oatmeal linen chairs and a brown chesterfield sofa.
I saw an inspiration picture of shoji white and really liked it, is that a better choice? If so, what color do I do for trim? We have been using Chantilly lace upstairs and I love it but I don't think it would work with shoji. Do I paint the trim dark like the picture?

5 years agoWe plan to completely redo the kitchen in a few years- new cabinets, new appliances, new layout. I will get stainless steel aappliance and counter depth fridge. I know it's not optimal to paint before a Reno, but I don't want to live with our current paint for another 2 years. Even if that means we have to repaint after the Reno. It's done really poorly and is not at all our taste. Look at how they transitioned the colors, lol. We do already have our tile picked out and both colors work with it (we painted large carboard swatches and ordered a sample). This is our island.

Pandtkendall that's great you enjoy your HM sofa and enjoyed working with Duane. Here's to many, many years of enjoyment. I am comfortable buying furniture from a distant company. Thanks for mentioning Duane. I will look him up. I'd love to travel to his store in the near future. I bought a Classic Leather sofa and recliner in 1987 from a company in Southern Pines owned by two fantastic brothers Miller and Cliff Barnes. I never met them and did everything over the phone The furniture has seen heavy use and three large dogs over the years. I love the leather but I'm tired of the style. The sofa still looks good but the recliner is aging. My husband and I used to sit in the recliner together and then our 90 pound dog would climb up on our laps. I took care of the furniture and faithfully cleaned it and moved the cushions around. Maybe around ten years or so I had new insides made for the cushions. The sofa sits right in front of a big window with lots of light. There isn't any sun damage. At some point I tried to kill the furniture using 409 or water and vinegar to clean it but didn't die. (Not cleaning products I'd ever suggest). I have no idea what type of leather but it's soft and indestructible. I realize today's leather will not be as good as the older leather we have but we want our next set to also be leather. Comments (83)Without seeing the floors, it’s very hard to say, but somewhere in this post you can see my wood look tiles in my bathroom which are gray and it looks awesome. I would recommend getting a sample and putting it up in the basement. Since I assume there is very little natural light, the tone will largely depend on your lighting. If your flooring has a warm gray tone to it, it will probably look great. If it has a bluish cool gray tone to it, you’d have to see how it looks side by side. Hope this helps a little! Comments (70)cdisimone - I have very similar color cabinets and granite in my kitchen except my backsplash is lighter and floors are very dark porcelain, wood look tile. I've been looking for a color that will work throughout the majority of my house too. After weeks of deliberating, I started with my dining room and painted Shoji White last night. Not sure I like it....it does not look warm or creamy in my house at all. It looks like a very light cool gray. :-( I was going more for a warm white so I can brighten things up but still have the warm, cozy feel. I'm going to give it a few days before continuing on through the rest of my house. My suggestion is to paint an entire wall or much larger sample on your wall before deciding!...See MoreElle

5 years agoSorry, Chantilly Lace is a Benjamin Moore color. We've used it upstairs as trim and also in the closet room, but the upstairs is all Grey's and blues.
I'm still just as stuck as ever. I was thinking Swiss coffee and if it's too light then I'd keep going down the paint chip until it's dark enough. I also still like shoji.
Since posting this my husband broke 4 bottles of wine on the old rug so we had to replace it (which actually gave us the chance to up the size). I also got furniture for the sitting room. Here's some updated pictures. We plan to add a cowhide rug and a real coffee table.

2 years agoOh wow lol, it’s fun to see what we thought when we first bought the house. We actually never did anything but paint, and put up some surprisingly realistic plastic backsplash stickers. The prices were just too high -$5k just to remove the tile, not even replace it, etc. We didn’t feel it was worth it for the starter neighborhood.
But thanks to people moving out of the city en masse, we were able to sell the house for a fantastic profit this summer as-is. The new owners are doing a kitchen reno and floor replacement.When we set out to paint we must have tried 40 different colors, no exaggeration. I even hired a pro to pick out colors for me and she picked 5 awful options. I quickly learned that what is popular for 14 foot ceiling houses doesn’t look good at all in our 8 foot no-window house. All the subtle off-whites actually became dark beiges with strong undertones.
We ended up with BM Cloud Cover, and are so smitten we plan to use it in our new house (which luckily has more windows and wood floors, but 90” ceilings). It reads slightly warm but not yellow. We did not paint the baseboards, they remained an awful high gloss white.
