Comments (2)Yes, oil can give you a golden or amber result right out of the can and will continue to darken as it ages. However, if you want the most contrast between boards, waterborne products will do that better than oil, as waterborne is a clear film and will not mask what it is applied over....See Morewater based vs oil based hardwood floor refinishing?
Comments (11)we have a very busy household, 4 teenagers, dog, etc and our floor guy very highly recommended oil over water - we have three coats in the kitchen and two thoughout the rest of the house - it looks and is holding up beautifully....a friend has three coats of water base that is showing wear and tear after two years (less busy household...only two teens!) - yes you have to be out of your home for several days - but there was very little if any odor when we returned......See MoreLooking for Tung Oil/Wax or? for Hardwood Floor Care
Comments (18)Thank you all so very much. Seems Waterlox is the way to go. There is only one dealer in BC appearing on their website and he ain't none too close at hand! :-)) I'll keep my fingers crossed they have more and just haven't updated yet. :-)) So now, do I have this right? #1 Vacc thoroughly #2 Go over floor with a damp microfibre mop #3 Add stain to Waterlox Low Sheen (how does one decide on the amount of stain??) #4 Apply with Lambswool Applicator(s) - Just one coat? #5 Leave house for 3-4 days. :-)) I will do in late Spring so windows/doors can be open. Concern #1 - I have an elderly (20 years) cat and a not-so-puppy-anymore puppy. Puppy doesn't travel well and frankly neither does cat girl. I was thinking perhaps tenting in the backyard (Cat girl will just LOVE that -- NOT!). Does it really take 3-4 days for the odor to settle? I'm only doing the liv/din & a short set of stairs (2 down to front entrance hall). Cat girl spends her time upstairs. What kind of challenges might I have? Concern #2 I have a couple of round rings which are very dark. Something like a plant watermark but waay darker than the floor stain. No idea what its from. Should I sand those areas first do you think? Roccocogurl - if I were to try the Sofix first, what would I need to do if I decided to go with the Waterlox after the fact? My concern is I REALLY don't want any *shine* but simply the richness of old well polished wood. BTW Breezy your kitchen + floors look FAB but I'm thinking a wee bit shiny for moi. Thanks everyone for sharing. This (what to do - what to do thing) has been bothering me for some time. It's so great to have folks who don't want shiny floors offer input and ideas. Comments (19)If you're referring to WOCA Wood Cleaner (http://www.wocadirect.com/wood-cleaner/), it should be used before the initial oiling and can be used before subsequent re-oilings. The name is a bit misleading but thankfully there are ready resources these days to find out what a product is for and how to use it. Even then it can be a bit confusing, like when using the Rubio site to determine how to treat your worn floor. Then my Rubio rep. nonchalantly told me ignore all the website instruction, mix the Soap 100:1 in a spray bottle, mist and mop, re-oil the floor every year or two with the same oil as used to finish originally. I'm loathe to admit that my one year old Rubio White oiled floor has only been vacuumed, never mopped. Twice I bought and mixed the Soap and ended up giving them to a customer. I'm an oil convert, as long as people don't mind taking on a little extra maintenance. While spray painting a paneled wall, blasts of air loosened my floor masking. By the time I finished, paint had dried. I carefully scraped, cleaned with some lacquer thinner, sanded with 120 grit paper and re-oiled. It looks flawless. With a poly finish this mistake could have been a disaster. Bona does have a product called Natural Oil Floor Cleaner. I bought one to test but haven't had a chance yet. I'll use it on a showroom floor or my own home rather than a customer's floor. It looks like the one on their website: https://www.bona.com/en-US/Bona-Professional/Products/Floor-Care/Cleaners1/Bona-Pro-Series-Natural-Oil-Floor-Cleaner/ I agree with your take on products. These manufacturers can't all be formulating their own finishes and cleaners. It's probably best to buy the one you suspect is the same as OEM and try it on a sample or a remote section of the floor....See MoreRelated Professionals
