Can we start a container garden picture thread?
Comments (52)First of all... wonderful pictures, everyone! Thank you for sharing them all! Beautiful trees, flowers, and other living things! I love it! Second... why do I plant my bulbs as shallowly as I do? Because there's no reason to bury the entire bulb when it's in the controlled environment of a container. The important plant to medium contact point is the basal plate, from whence the roots grow, and that part of the bulb is sufficiently buried. I like to keep the majority of my amaryllids planted shallowly for a few reasons... some amaryllids actually grow more as epiphytes in their natural habitat, I like to see what's happening to my bulbs, and having them above the surface level a bit allows for ease in keeping them groomed. Most bulbs settle in once planted, and either draw themselves down or lift themselves up a bit as their roots grow, to suit their growth habits. It's more of a habit for me to place them rather shallowly, mainly because of past experiences with saturated bagged soils and a propensity for Hippeastrums to rot in excess moisture. So, there are many reasons why I tend to plant amaryllids shallowly in pots. If I could grow them in the gardens, I'd place them deeper... well, most of them....See Morefyi, ggg posted an official swapping thread over on exchange page
Comments (17)Hey, maybe if we just do a new thread in both places, as "Spring Plant Trade 2013". Copy everything absultely pertinent to the event and go from there. I read some were unclear about it if they were not following it from the winter. GGG- I am told I am doing better than 99% of people who have this surgery, I am 'younger than most', healthy and active enough, the Ptherapist said he could they would have to put a bit in my mouth to hold me back. Almost, it is hard to keep me down, and I may be pushing it a bit. Mine is called a long segment fusion, illeac fixation, then from sacrum to T10. I also have a C5, 6 , 7 fusion that is over 15 years old. This surgery was a long time coming, the objective was a complete reconstuctive correction because of scoliosis, the spina bifida had caused a lot of my problems for 35 years, but the spine was collapsing, causing all the stenosis and nerve compression. Many problems, symptoms, affecting my whole lower body from armpits down. It was a tough pill to swallow, but it was not hard to decide to do it, the other options meant not walking, etc, eventually losing all function of my lower body. I was going to email you, but didn't see the option, hope your back doing better, maybe it would be best for just a smaller group. I would still be in, and have a friend who loves to trade, etc. she is just not active here. It is up to you entirely. I have been here about everyday, I'll keep checking in. :-)...See More4th Annual Tomato & Pepper Seed Exchange - Updates (Thread 2)
Comments (48)Tomorrow morning I am mailing seeds to: * mayeeta That's the last of the envelopes for this swap. If I inadvertantly forgot to post that I mailed your envelope back, not to worry...it's been sent. Thanks everyone for your participation and patience while I fill envelopes. Next year, if I decide to do this again, I think I'll bump up the deadline by a week, so I'm not stuffing envelopes when I should be getting ready for Christmas...LOL. Take care everyone. Enjoy the Christmas season with your friends, family and of course...beloved pets. .....Heather...See MoreShould we cut the dying/dead tip on Picea orientalis "Skylands"?
Comments (16)Thank you to all, especially Sara Malone, Embothrium, and Alley Cat. We’ve been more vigilant about watering deeply with a hose at the base and will continue to do that until Thanksgiving and for the next 2-3 years. Our soil tends to clay which may have a finer texture than what was in the original potting soil. The tree was planted in the Spring and gets 7-8 hours of sun mostly from the east. Some of the roots were cut to promote growth before placing the tree in the planting hole. So will hope for the best and be patient. My concern had been that cutting off the leader – even a dead one – would lessen the chance for a new leader to grow. Other than being unsightly, would leaving the dead leader on for a while longer be a detriment? A source for insects?...See Morelucky_cloud
