Colors for Walls & Trim - Please Help Sort Out Whites
Comments (6)Only have pics of my current kitchen and the configuration will be different in the remodel. My new cabinets will go to the ceiling & a small window will be replaced w/ a 6' bank of windows, so there won't be much painted wall space in the kitchen, save for the area over the wainscot on one wall. The issue is the kitchen flows right into a small sunroom/keeping area which flows into the LR. There is nowhere to break from one wall color to another, which is why I can't choose a bold color for the kitchen. Too bad, because I like your choc. brown suggestion. Especially since the kitchen will be even more light-filled w/ the new window, I could risk going darker in there. It would also add warmth in the winter. So, I need a color that will work throughout. I haven't disliked living w/ Dover White, but I do want some distinction between the walls & trim this time. And Dover White isn't an option as it is not at all complementary to the Buttercream door sample I have. Those cabinets are going to make up a lot of my main floor real estate which is why I'm agonizing over whether to go off white or do the walls in a light neutral. I'm going to have to live with and decorate around that paint choice for a long time....See Moretrim & ceiling color to go w/sw nomadic desert - please help!
Comments (37)Just to follow up, Kilim Beige on the walls with Alabaster trim/ceiling looks great in the new house! I love the colors with the dark walnut doors/cabinets and bronze fixtures. They just hooked up electrical so it looks nice with artificial light as well. Sometimes I regret not looking into SW Pavilion Beige, but I don't know why I do that to myself...what's done is done and I should be so relieved that Kilim Beige looks great! When they first painted I thought I saw peach undertones and I panicked. But I did not see that again. It is definitely warm, but I can't detect any real undertones. Flooring isn't in yet, so I'm curious to see how the color will change. patty_cakes, you wrote in a previous post above: "As for the color/colors, just a very pleasant, warm tan that has a beautiful candlelight hue in the evening. Good luck. ;o)" I thought of your comment when we saw the house for the first time last night with artificial light...kilim beige does have that beautiful candlelight hue in the evening! I will post pics soon. Thanks again to everyone, I appreciate your input and advice!...See MoreNeed help please with painting wood trim and doors white
Comments (16)You know... that wood looks pretty good. 70s still had half-way decent wood. So, ok I get that the modern palette has moved away from brown as the neutral to grays. However wood stain color choices have evolved the same way - plenty of grays now, from charcoals to silvery bleached out grays. Not to mention the dark ebonies, jet black, grayed out browns etc. Weathered gray is a popular color. What I dont get is the automatic default to WHITE 99.9% of the time on this forum. PLEASE consider sanding/staining this wood instead of encasing it in an opaque plastic film. Having lived with "landlord white" throughout the 80s -90s, white painted trim looks good for about 5 mins before it starts getting dinged and dirty. In a lot of settings, I think dark trim of whatever color just looks classier too. There are various products out there - rather than a full-on stripping job (yuck) you might consider some of the heavier bodied stains that just need a light sanding to give it some "tooth" (removing only clear finish without going deeper and removing the color.) I dont want to write a novel so Ill just leave it at that - the woodworker forum could give you m ore specifics.....See Moreplease help with trim
Comments (7)i prefer white as well. i prefer white crowns, too but man oh man you'd have a tough time doing that dentil molding when its already installed. my carpenter/painters made the mistake of not priming and doing a first coat of my egg and dart crown before putting it up and those guys had tired arms by the time they were finished. for that reason, make an educated decision on what to paint and what to leave as stained so you dont have to tackle the crown. i suggest type 'mixed painted and stained trim' in your google search bar to see what others have done....See MoreRenee
