Check these pics out of Michigan Bananas and other Tropix
Comments (0)Check out the link to all of the tropicals found in SE Michigan. There are lots having fun with this stuff in a marginal climate. Amazing that SE Michigan is such a warm climate especially when most of the states south of us actually get lower overall winter temps. The Great Lakes bring us lots of snow, but it also moderates our weather very well. www.tropicsofmichigan.com...See MoreMichigan late winter pics
Comments (8)It wasn't really that hard to keep them looking good with this relatively mild winter we had. We got down to 5 degrees at my house, so extreme lows were pretty mild for Michigan. Good year to try some new exotics. I looked at my bananas the other day. The stems were mushy so I cut them down to about 6 inches from ground level. This is their second winter in ground. They're planted against the foundation, so I have no doubt that they'll come back, just kinda disappointed I can't seem to keep any pseudostem....See MoreTropical Michigan- Some long overdue pics
Comments (7)Thanks for the compliments everybody. Jim, I have noticed that butias make excellent patio plants, but also seem to be one of my fastest growing palms too. And that trachy is going on its second winter in ground. Andy, yes the weather is definitely cooling off quickly. My Thai Giant elephant ear has almost stopped growing completely. Thanks Mike, that's the butia I got from you, and those filiferas were grown from the seeds you gave me. Alex, I have a canna intrigue(the purple one) as well as Musafolia. It's gotta be about 9 feet by now, reaching the eaves on the side of the garage. And I've found that oleanders are one of the easiest patio plants to keep. Just make sure not to overwater....See MoreWintertime pics of my Michigan back yard
Comments (28)Frmmi, yes I may be interested in your coldframe. How big is it? What city are you in? Palmlover, a robusta would not survive in zone 6 without a heat source, even if it were heavily mulched. I can't even get my basjoos to come back from the roots in zone 6 even if they are heavily mulched. My windmill survives because it is a zone 7b palm, while a robusta is a zone 9 palm. Any palm in a pot in zone 6 would also need a heat source to survive. If the roots are frozen, like Jimhardy mentioned, then they can't take up water and will die. You're best off bringing the pot inside for the winter, or at least into a garage with windows....See MoreVaporvac Z6-OhioRiverValley
