What’s wrong with my azalea

My azalea is looking terrible. It’s turning brown. I’m not sure what to do with it. Any advice is appreciated.

Worcester, MA? We had some really cold weather without a lot of snow early this winter (late Dec. and early Jan.) so it may be that the cold did damage.

Tell us more about the growing conditions, (moisture, light, soil, landscape fabric?, how long it has been there) and if you know it, the variety.

The photos make it look very close to the shrub behind it but photos can be misleading. How far apart are they, and can you add a photo from slightly farther away?

Probably cold damage, with the green part having been beneath the snow at a critical time.

If the root ball dried out, you may have to dig them up and soak the root ball to get it wet. Once the root ball dries out, it is very difficult to get it to take water. Just soak until it gets heavy. All this talk about watering shouldn't let us forget that azaleas also need good drainage, not standing water. My wife and I planted dwarf azaleas across the front of our house. We live just outside of New Orleans and azaleas love this area. I have them in my back yard and side of my house and they are doing well. These azaleas in the pictures do get direct evening sun and I feel that may not like that very much. Due to weed problems we planted these azaleas below a sheet of ground cover, and ran a soaker hose watering system under the cover and mulched over the cover. I know we have lace bugs and are treating this. two of the pictures above are the azaleas planted a year ago and the ones I am concerned about. The azalea in the pot. Is a fresh azalea from the nursery and exactly what my azaleas looked like when they were planted. Any comments, suggestions, ideas will be appreciated. jamescpittman

Here’s what I do. I watch bugs on the leaves to see if they’re a problem or not. If the foliage looks healthy and there’s no other pests, they’re probably good. If they’re meat eaters and I see them eating other bugs, they’re definitely good. This time of year I get lots of little larvae that look alarming, but on closer inspection they’re munching on aphids so I welcome them. Your foliage looks healthy, no little bite marks, pretty and green, doesn’t look like the new growth is getting the life sucked out of it. I would bet they’re good bugs.

Nikki, I lived in Silver Spring MD for 10 years! I also had a very hard time with newly planted azaleas. My neighbors had nice, established plants, and I couldn't get mine going. Looking back, I think the main issue was that the plants I got always arrived pot-bound and, even after "roughing up" the roots, they never quite got adjusted to the clay soil. No matter how nice and wide the planting hole was. Older leaves would turn yellow and brown. When I dug them out after a few months, the root ball looked exactly the same with no new roots developing in the surrounding area. Just something to consider... And I definitely wouldn't fertilize them if they are stressed.

Thank you for your answers. It’s in the west side of the house so it gets part sun during the day. I don’t think there’s any landscape fabric. It bears white flowers and there is a shrub behind. I did not plant but the previous owner did. Should I cut down the brown part or just leave it alone. Thanks so much!
