Kohler Whitehaven Farmsink cast iron backordered

Building, our cabinets were just delivered and I was just informed by builder that the Kohler cast iron farmsink isn't available for 1-3 months, due to a fire at their plant. They gave me 2 other choices, but both were smaller in size. I'm thinking the island was build to specifications for that Kohler sink, so how is another sink gonna work? I also have read lots of negative things about fireclay sinks, which is the alternative. They crack, chip easily, etc. Am I stuck waiting? Anyone know anything about Kohler's timeline currently?

I've looked at substitutes and for several reasons, don't think I'd be happy. Finding something else with the exact measurements isn't going to work since the cabinets have already been made to fit the Kohler sink. And I've read that fireclay can crack, which is why I picked the cast iron in the first place. Kohler just happens to be the only one that makes a cast iron farmsink.

I think you're right, in the long run, waiting will be worth getting what I want. Thx!

Have you tried searching online for the sink? Get the model number and google. Just because the factory isn't working doesn't mean no one has any inventory in stock.

I have a white Irontones sink, undermounted. No scratches so far, I do have the Kohler grid in it. I had another Kohler cast iron sink in the kitchen before the reno, I love cast iron. I did consider a Silgranit, but couldn't find a white one to see in person, so I chickened out. The only picture I have handy is just after installation, before the strainer was even installed.

First I would call Kohler so there is a record of the issue and so you can get a feel for how receptive they are to taking care of the issue. If there is a dimple with iron showing through it will rust so I would definitely want it replaced. Will your builder be involved or did you purchase the sink on-line?

I love my Kohler Whitehaven. It is easier to install. I am sure you saw some at the plumb supply store. The laundry room does not usually get the abuse the kitchen sink does, so either should hold up, but in the kitchen I determined the cast iron was less likely to have problems. I don’t think you are doing the blame game - just asking. Unfortunately this is one I could see where it’s really no ones fault. Are you doing an undercount whitehaven tall sink ? I think the sink has to be mounted before you have counter put in. If i recall - when I called Kohler they did tell me 6 months by that was for the smaller sink . The 36” is in high demand so they were trying to get as many of those out ? I would just call Kohler . Moore Supply in California had 9 in stock when I wanted to buy one but they would not transfer one to Moore supply in Texas bc they also needed them for their contractors since it’s in high demand. Maybe call them direct and see if they have one.

Yes! I found one on ebay, but it seems to be a fraudulent account, according to ebay after trying to order it. No other online supply companies have them in stock either.

I got a response from Kohler and they are saying 45 days.

How will you feel about a substitute?

Best case scenario, one month isn't that long. Worst case, well, three months is three months. And probably not as long in reality as it seems to you right now : ) .

If it helps, we had one Currey & Co. light fixture for the dining room take about two months to ship from the US to Canada only to get lost and have to be reshipped (another two months or so), and the brass hardware for the kitchen and dining room be backordered for three months -- it's made in England, Lee Valley didn't have enough in stock and needed to re-order. But in both cases, while I knew I'd be happier to have a light fixture and hardware MUCH sooner, I didn't want those items to be "poor" substitutes. The light fixture makes the dining room, and the hardware (the same ones we have in our current house) is lovely. A teenage son's friend actually mentioned the other night how much he likes the hardware : ) .

So for us it was worth the wait.
