I mulch my vines and they seem to grow TOO well. Mine are about 10 years old but I moved them 4 years ago to a better location and then pruned them too much so fruiting was inhibited. This year I have a lot of blooms, and hopefully will bet my first fruit.

Well, I can see some potential for this - they are rampant vines. On the other hand, they are pretty hard to get started. They don't seem to root by layering, cuttings are tough to root with a low success rate, and I've only had seedlings come up once or twice under mine from the fallen fruit in 20 years of growing them. It can be a challenge to keep mine from swallowing the adjacent telephone pole. I never would have put their trellis so close to it when I built it had I known just how rampant of growers they are. Here's a picture I posted last year on another forum. Buried under that mess towards the top right of the photo is a transformer -- I'm sure the utility company is not pleased with me. I whack the vines down every couple of years to control them -- I lose a season of fruit, but I've also found if I don't, they get woody and don't fruit well anyway, so it's pretty much a necessary evil and keeps them vigorous. I collect the male flowers... cut off the stamens that have the pollen attached onto a piece of paper. I fold up the paper like an envelope and tape it shut, label it, and put it in the freezer. When you are wanting to use it.... take it out of the freezer and let it sit for awhile before using a qtip or kids paint brush to apply the pollen onto the female flowers.

I have them on a trellis outside but am waiting until later to plant the male as it has already started blooming so I am keeping it in the pot. They were located in the back of the outdoor plants back by the edging and paving stones in one gallon pots and are healthy 3 ft tall plants. They are marked male and female on the tags. You need 1 male for every 6 females. Good luck and hopefully they still have some. Bob
