9x8 kitchen in a 4 bed, 3 bath old house?
Comments (9)Exactly what I was saying about old farmhouses and the back porch kitchen, LOL! I am looking at this house and thinking to myself.......1915? It could be, but it looks way older than that. It's the same style my house is, and mine has the 'ell' and my original kitchen is still where the back of the ell is. My house dates to 1820something. In my county, they used to put all old houses at an arbitrary date. They seemed to have stopped doing that and now just say old. Thanks for the link generic123. Yes, I know pretty closely where this house is located. Nice area, we have relatives who have a home nearby......my husband's old family farmhouse, but the farm is still intact! Beautiful home too, really beautiful!!!!! and it looks like the present owners have been very kind to it. I suspect there may be more fireplace stacks in this house, with the fireboxes covered over with wall. We have eight in our house. One for every major room. If it was actually built in 1915, maybe there wouldn't be, but there would have been furnace runs for a coal furnace or evidence at one time of steam heat or gas or coal grates in fireplaces in each room. I wonder how well a heat pump works in a house this size in Ohio? Or what the electric bill looks like? If you are at all serious about a residence, always look at utility bill histories. We finally got main gas through our rural area, and the first thing we did was get off electric heat and on to gas....See MoreDesperately need help finding the right 6x9 area rug!
Comments (8)The best way to find a rug is to go to sites like are offered in the suggestions...there are literally thousands of options...personally i love wool rugs as they are thicker and heavier and more durable...the corners dont roll up...they dont smash down when you walk on them and they are so easy to keep clean ...the least expensive ones are tufted but they last forever and work in every area of the home...looking good forever...i prefer the ones that have smaller patterns and more color...especially in the sleek contemporary settings ....you seem to have an eye and taste for color as exhibited in your art...and either contemporary or traditional would work in your space...the search is simplified by typing in your color ...size ...material...type ...this will educate you in what is out there as well...lastly they make small sizes that are very inexpensive that can be ordered to see what the rug will look like in your size...and are easy to use elsewhere in the home so you dont have to return them......See Morecan I mix 4x4 and 2x8 tiles
Comments (17)The biggest issue in creating something like the above, is finding two tiles that will line up AFTER adding a grout line. You have to find out what the actual measurements are for each tile - not all sites list this information in the spec sheet shown for the product - many only list the nominal sizes. It was “lucky” that I wanted to use the Cloe tile due to its actual size vs. nominal size. 2 1/2” x 8” tile - the actual height of the tile is 0.07” LARGER, and the width is 0.13” SMALLER than listed nominal dimensions. 5” x 5” tile - the actual size of the tile is 0.19” LARGER than listed nominal dimensions. In order to make these two tiles work, the grout lines will need to be pretty thin. Cloe has irregular edges which allows the grout to be worked into those spaces - many people on Houzz have installed it without using the recommended 3/16” grout line. The grout lines in the second pic must have been very small like the ones I calculated in order to work. If you have a 4”x4” tile and 2”x8” tile that you want to use - and if their listed nominal sizes = actual sizes of the tiles, it wouldn’t work after adding grout lines. For example, using a tile line with 4”x4” and 2”x8” tile sizes. Two 4”x4” tiles with a grout line will always have a longer length than one piece of 2”x8” tile. The same is true when stacking two pieces of the 2”x8” tile next to a 4”x4” tile - the grout line will interfere with lining up the top and bottom edges. You need to find tiles specifically sized to be mixed with the other sizes within the collection. I don’t think that it was a coincidence that the Cloe tiles worked - most likely, the manufacturer specifically calculated the dimensions of both sizes in order to allow for mixing the tiles together. Maybe I’m wrong - but I don’t feel like I’m that lucky!...See MoreWhere can I find an area rug like my old one.
Comments (8)Sorry to hear the JC Penney quality of rugs has gone down. I bought a 8x10' rug from them 8 years ago ($220 included tax & shipping) and it has been excellent up until now. It has a latex backing. The rug is solid in color and 100% nylon. It's called "majestic Scroll". I bought a different (called "shag border") rug from JCP at the same time for a different room. The shag border rug was terrible. Starting at about the first month, it began loosing strands of fibers. Sadly, I believe the Majestic Scroll rug is discontinued. Good luck on your search. Keep us posted if you find a rug you like....See MoreJ. Stephens Interiors
