Unusually for me I'd say first priority is to paint the fireplace white for an immediate lift of the heart and lightening of the room. You will probably want a new mantel, wood and a bit deeper and lower than the white one. I think it will change the whole feeling of the room and make it easier to make creative decisions on the furnishings etc.

I think you can happily put your TV on the wall opposite the fireplace, just have the two couches facing each other.

The only problem I see is the TV/speakers. They just do not belong in this room.

Could you post a rough floor plan with measurements? I can't see the TV working on that far wall and definitely not above the fireplace.

Many people her scoff at Joanna Gaines but I really like her rugs. Many are fresh and modern and neutral.

I have a long narrow living room and found two things that made me love my room after years of thinking it would never work. First apartment scale furniture. The seat size is equal to my previous overstuffed white slipcovered sofa but the arms and depth are miles smaller so the comfort stayed the same but opened up the room so much.

The only issue with where you hope to place the tv would be you would only see it easily when laying on one of the sofas flanking the two side walls, as in Rita's suggestion. I love the look of two equally sized sofas facing each other but did not go that route because we have to seat more than two usually when watching family tv together. I ended up mounting it above my fireplace, although frowned upon it works perfectly and comfortably for us.

The other change was opting to forgo a love seat for a chair and ottoman. When entertaining two people can still sit, one on the ottoman, but it looks better angled than a love seat and offers more walk around room.

You have too much big furniture in a very narrow room. And your TV is enormous. If you have one in another room, must you have one in this room?

Take everything out of the room and start adding it back, piece by piece. If you're tired of the oriental rug, buy a seagrass rug. And yes, paint the fireplace white.

I’m assuming the OP has a tv in the room because they do watch tv in that room. While it is a little large for that spot, I think that’s the best place for it. I believe the Colonial Williamsburg feel is due to the colonial style furniture, not the placement of your furniture or tv. And yes, I would paint the fireplace.

I don't think you need to paint your fireplace. Stain the mantle, edit the accessories and removing the brass surround will make a big difference.

I added a lighter rug and pillows and an ottoman. I have no idea of your style so I just used transitional things.

You won't have to make many changes to freshen up your space.

So many good ideas posted! Thank you all. my apologies for such dark photos, I took them at night. There are two reasons that I am considering moving the TV to the wall opposite the fireplace (a photo shows a pie safe there presently). One is that we already have cable ,etc wired for that space. Secondly, that wall is dead space. Although I have a pie safe there (which I dislike and want to sell), the area in front of the pie safe has to remain somewhat open as it is a walk through space. There are doorways on either side of the pie safe (one to a hall, one to a bathroom), and then the large wide opening to a sunroom. So wall mounting a TV there is good utilization of that space while still providing a flow of traffic around the space. I would put a narrow cabinet below a wall mounted TV to house cable boxes, apple TV, etc. The fireplace needs a complete makeover. I have considered painting it as a temporary fix, but ultimately, would like to cover the top with sheet rock/plaster, and cover the bottom with white trim and granite. Or at least trim out the sides of the brick. I would also cover the hearth. But that is a goal, and I need a quick solution. As some of you suggested, I am considering replacing just one sofa (with a longer one) and just adding some arm chairs, and possibly an ottoman or two. I had not considered placing the TV on the long wall. I have no cable hookup there...... but maybe. And yes the TV is way too big for that spot lol! My husband wants to replace it with an even larger one. I won't consider that unless we move it. We have a TV in another room, but well, his and her TV viewing :)

What do you all think about the idea of keeping a longer sofa on the wall to the left (where the longer sofa currently is), and placing a couple of upholstered chairs on each side of the fireplace? The width of the space on each side of the fireplace is not great so they might need to sit out a bit. Maybe an ottoman for one of them. Then I would add a single upholstered chair to the right of the window facing straight out, but perhaps it could be turned for TV watching if necessary? A low table under the window. Thoughts?

IF you move the tv to the other wall, viewing it from the sofa won’t be very comfortable.

hi i agree that you will not have enough wall space if you go with an even larger tv. so the longer wall would be better. in which case you can place the sofa in front of the windows, facing the tv or you can have it facing the fireplace and far enough back that the chair can face the tv while sitting next to the couch, and in front o f the windows.

in regards to the fireplace. would you believe people are still installing them? if you have none you want one, if you get one it is never the right one. Anyway, I am never nuts about painting fp. I would do a smaller less showy screen as they show above. I would then put a floating wood mantel. gives you a modern lodgy feel.

Thank you all for so many suggestions. I thought I would post an update. I decided to remove the oriental rug I had added to the room. Instead, I put a solid off-white area rug that is much larger. It was originally in the room. While it is not the look I want to keep for the room, the lighter colored rug provides a balance with the brick fireplace and blue sofas. Simply put, it looks a lot better than the oriental rug did. So back to square one haha. I will tackle this room as my next project. That will include addressing the fireplace first, most likely covering the brick. Who knows, I may even knock the wall out between this family room and my much larger living room to create increased opportunities for seating. In the meantime, I will be collecting "looks" I like. Thank you!

I would not cover or paint the brick. If you can't find a decorating solution, maybe lightly white wash the brick or limewash the brick.

Alternatively, white slip covered sofa/chairs, warm creamy wall paint (I can't tell what color you have currently), paint the screen a glossy black, and maybe some white wash on the brick.
