Shingles
Comments (6)To the best of my knowledge, the virus can be spread only by direct contact with the rash (the blisters break and crust) to anyone who has not had the chickenpox. If the rash is covered this is not an issue. However, to be ultra cautious, I avoided pregnant and immuno-compromised friends as the authorities suggest. A good friend who is undergoing chemo is still a little leery of being around me, and perfectly healthy ones are still doing very wide air hugs and extra-distant cheek kisses;). Interestingly, a couple of friends who had the Zostavax subsequently had Shingles (presumably milder than otherwise) and are considering getting the Shingrix vaccine. I have not seen much discussion about it in the media, but this may change once it is released....See MoreGot my first one today.
Comments (13)I got my first shot at Walgreens on Thursday. I had a little soreness at the site but not much. I have BCBS insurance through work and it paid 100% of the $174. We've already met our yearly deductible though so I'm not sure if they would have paid the total amount we if still had deductible to pay. I need to remember to get the second shot before the end of the year just in case. I can't get it until mid November since you have to wait at least 2 months....See MorePublic Service Announcement: Vaccines. Not that one.
Comments (50)I had shingles when I was a kid. It was only one pin prick-sized dot, but lordy how it itched and hurt! My sis had had a bad case a few years before, early 70's (mother had never heard of shingles and thought it was poision ivt; was a wide ring almost around her body when mother finally took her to the doc); that's how my mother knew what I had. Back then, the only treatment was B6 shorts (or was it B12? not sure, but it was one or the other). My sis had to go every day for 2 weeks for a shot; I only had to have one. Got the Shingrix as soon as I could; had to wait because there was a shortage. A tip: don;t get it at the same time as a flu shot! Ugh, felt like crap the next day!...See MoreI know there was a thread about Shingles but not finding it-
Comments (22)Happy to update that the side effects were really just the first 24 hours. Today I feel fine. I am taking it a bit slower but mostly because of the dreary rainy day it is. No headache no aches at all. I hope I didn't discourage anyone from getting it- DH and my sister and brother in law all had their singirx shots within the past year or so and none of them had anything more than a sore arm....See MoreAnglophilia
