help/ info needed starting hydro garden in austin, tx
Comments (5)It seems like your off to a good start. If you are looking for something like a majority of the photos on your page, you want an ebb and flow system, or flood and drain. Basically the plants sit in the net cups, the water/nutrients are pumped into where the plants are growing from a tank, then drained back to the tank. If you do a few searches here on the hydroponic section, and also google you can find lots of information as to the different hydro setups and how to build your own. There are many different setups you can use, and theres bound to be a few that will work in your situation....See MoreFix my lawn or start over? All weeds
Comments (2)If you are trying to save money, I would nurse this weed patch through the summer and spend your money and time on it in the fall - late August. Now is a poor time to seed new grass because it does not have time to develop sturdy roots before the summer heat hits. Secondarily, if you seed and do the proper watering now, all the crabgrass seed will germinate and take over the lawn by July. If you just start watering proper for a mature lawn now, you'll be surprised how much better it looks. Having said that, if you want a bermuda lawn, then you should start in June or July, so I wasn't thinking of that in the previous paragraph. Set your mower up high. Tall grass and weeds will shade out the lower growing grass and weeds. It also looks more lush when tall. And again, this does not apply if you want bermuda. Proper watering for mature grass is deep and infrequent. Deep means a full inch as measured by empty cat food or tuna cans placed around the yard. Infrequent means once every 2 weeks this time of year and once a week when the temps get into the 90s every day. Mulch mow when you mow. See if you can identify the weeds and plants growing in the lawn so you will know which herbicides will work best when the time comes to renovate. Fertilize with anything, but if you want to improve the health of your soil, use organic fertilizer at least once a year. I use it all the time and life has gotten much better, lawnwise. If I have any lawn issues, I'm confident that poor soil is not the reason. What are the big round green things in the yard?...See MoreWhere do I start? Overrun with weeds and no experience.
Comments (7)I just go with a simple, budget-friendly plan to start. Mow at least once a week on the highest mower setting. This will discourage weed growth and reduce water requirements. Mulch mow the clippings back into the lawn. This reduces fertilizer needs and water requirements. Fertilize now with any standard lawn fertilizer - organic will work fine. Don't bother watering now, but once summer hits, water once a week with 1" of water. Any easy way to measure one inch is to take an empty tuna can and put it out when you start the sprinkler. When it is full, you are done. If you really do have a ton of weeds, you might consider a 1 time treatment with weed-b-gon. The hose-end sprayer kinds covers a large area quickly. It definitely isn't organic, but it is cheap and fast and won't interfere with your ability to chose an all-organic program down the line. If you do those things, your lawn will improve dramatically from now until the end of summer. It definitely won't be perfect, but it should be a ton better. At that point, you can decide if you are happy with "improved" or want to start over with premium seed and go for a showcase quality lawn....See MoreI am new and have no idea where to start-and I have LOTS of ants
Comments (3)Ants are an unsolvable problem, spraying only kills workers, and then you can not eat your crops. I was told to buy a bait to have the workers take back to the colony to feed the queen. No queen equals no workers. I bought every type of bait on the market and the ants would not touch it. They were too smart. If someone knows a cure for ants please post that. Try the soil forum, and add lots of compost. It costs a lot of money to buy a lot of compost and add it. It's a huge investment, but there is not much that can be done about the cost of it. Making compost takes time and also money for bins or other products to add to compost mainly browns or else you need lots of leaves. I have page up on my website about composting, if you want to read all my suggestions. Click on the soil link. Here is a link that might be useful: My website...See MoreBeth H. :
