Confused about tub install

OK so I have been tub shopping for awhile now and thought we'd be replacing our 80's style jacuzzi drop in with a clawfoot or small freestanding tub. Now that I've priced the clawfoot and the price is on the high side, I am rethinking paying that much when I could get an air bath (drop in style) with more bells ans whistles for a similar price point. On top of this I have been warned by 2 sales people that a clawfoot or freestanding install is way more complicated to install than a drop in. We are doing the work ourselves so now I am worried. If we did get in over our heads, we would obviously get a plumber but just wondering what the general consensus is on which is easier and also best cost/value option?
