Does it really matter if the 50's BR's didn't have shaker? If you like it, and you're going to the trouble of replacing doors, I would do whichever style you like best. Otherwise, why not just paint your 'real 50's' doors? You're not putting in 50's light switches, and I assume you're not putting in a 50's fan. Doesn't look like a 50's toilet... I actually like the look of the shaker style drawer front in your pic, even though I have shaker doors in my kitchen and went with slab on my smaller top drawers. Problem with the shaker drawer front, is I am not sure if you can put a handle in the middle part, is there enough wood? So, if you wanted to position your new knobs/handles in the middle that might be a deal breaker. I am not sure if this option would work for you, but in our Master BR we did not have enough space to put in a 4 gang box. I positioned 2 2 gangs one above the other. You could do 3 and 2, or 2 and 2 using one double. I put my two programmable switches (and I strongly recommend using a timer switch for your fan) together, and the light switches together. In your case, I would put the three light switches on one gang, and the fan and the outlet on the other.

sduck2, love that sink! The one in my photo is also Am. Std., but it's oval. Yours has a great little bit of "counter" space around the sink. sarchlos, will you have room for the door to open in toward the sink? I don't think we would. On the other hand, if the door was in the long wall, you could lose the 2' or so we have at the end where our door is, because it's just hamper, storage and door swing space. astridh, we'll definitely have a couple of niches. I can't see putting a lot of effort into a beautiful tiled shower and then hiding it behind a curtain. It's funny how several people have commented on camouflaging the tunnel look of the bathroom. We're so comfortable with it that our first thought was to use it to highlight a really cool shower. We have a powder room under our front stairs that's 3'x4' with a little wall mounted corner sink. It was a little crowded when my toddlers insisted on joining me in there, but it's totally functional otherwise. The great thing about tiny bathrooms is you can use really nice materials without breaking the bank.

Thanks for the replies. Haha, lukki  maybe my children are more high-maintenance than others (although I think theyÂre probably normal). I donÂt know how *anyone* does remodeling with small children. I canÂt imagine trying to do projects that require a great deal of concentration/attention while also having my 3 yr old and 8 month old need to eat / need diaper changes / want to color / misbehave/etc. I can barely paint a room while caring for the kids! The budget is more for reasons of not overimproving, rather than a matter of not having the money. We have enough money now to do almost whatever we want to do. But IÂve thought more about it and I think a bigger shower is something that, if we do it, will need to be for ourselves rather than for resale. I do appreciate the points you both bring up and we will think about this more. IÂd still love to hear from others!

Well this is in the DIY section as well, if you are capable of answering the questions, why not spend a minute to answer a few? Gardenweb has really gone downhill with all the "pros" coming on. Many of the pros seem to pretty much say "hire a pro", which seems a little self serving. Ill add I have had the exact same thing done with very high quality for about 25K 5 years ago when things were not quite as hot. That contractor did give me a 15K bid (without vanities), but is too busy right now. Ill give an example of the ridiculous costs. I needed 3 vent pipes moved to the walls, shower plumbing cut off and capped and bathtub plumbing cut off and capped. The estimate to do the work from one contractor was $5500 baked into the whole remodel. When I had individual plumbers come out to do an estimate they came in at 1500 which is about what I expected. Of course the plumbers that bid 1500 are too busy to take the job (working on big jobs), which is why some plumbers can charge $300/hour. I did the work myself which took me about 6 hours in total because I work very slow and carefully. I essentially took out one vent pipe per day. I dont haggle with contractors on price, but I do know about how much things should cost. Ill add that the vast majority of labor here are illegal immigrants with no certifications or formal training.
