5 years agoI'm with you, I've been searching for tile that isn't plain subway as I have a busier granite. Most recommend finding a color that is in your counter. I would avoid travertine as it tends to go pink. (I made that mistake before!) You can get a little more or less contrast depending on grout you use. Here's some examples of not white subway.... For sure get samples and bring home to view in your space!

these are from CleTile and have beautiful glaze. 4x4,2x2 or 2x6 sizes. clay tiles
gun metal gray ceramics
or a charcoal, iridescent glass subway (this comes in a lighter tones too) (DalTileglass horizons)
these are actually 2x9 chevron tiles laid out side by side (you could do the chevron as well) in a medium gray tone
silver crackle glaze, 2x6 tiles

Comments (3)Thank you for responding, not sure you saw the additional pictures but they are of the actual floor sample, those are the actual cabinets and countertop. Here is the dark cabinet sample, the floor sample and the countertop all places up against the tile for the fireplace. I did not have the cream wall cabinet sample to place there. Not sure what else finishing you are looking for, the floor isn’t actually installed yet so the white trim hasn’t been either. Why do I like the tile selection for the fireplace? The movement is interesting and it pops in an open concept area where the walls are all accessible beige and it goes well with the dark island cabinets (and the hood that will between the wall cabinets) and it looks good against the floor sample. I like neutral colors, but we need something to pop around the wall cabinets. It’s a tri-level house that is now open concept on the main level. Comments (2)They both look fine but it is so hard to tell from a single sample in a photo. Do you have your lights on? Your lighting will impact the undertones in the tile and counter as well. I would also look at handmade style tiles. They have subtle color variation and texture as well. If you find one with the right colors, they can help visually tie the cabinets and counter. Comments (9)i would leave things. the wood with the dark granite is classic altho its older. the shutters are nice. people see through the old finish....they will evaluate things on function/layout/etc For you to start working on the older cabs isnt worth it. people do their own thing .....reface/ strip and restain/ paint/ gut the kitchen...you cant possibly know.... I'd look for an upgrade to the dishwasher and probably get a somewhat stylish light fixture over the table [eliminate the fan] make sure the shelves inside the cabinets are not degrading or damaged from moisture and so on.
