Need some help decorating new house we just bought
Comments (5)first do get 2 couches. do not get sectional or a loveseat. first we have to figure your color preferences. black is a neutral, to an extent it tends to be really in your face. and it rarely is going to look cool. so lets see a couple new things i have seen. let me know what you think and what not, i will adjust....See MoreBought a new home and need ideas/help for kitchen facelift ;)
Comments (5)Hi Danielle, congrats on your new house! The kitchen's main challenge as I see it is a layout(say I'd be bothered by a very close position of the fridge next to the entrance, cooktop in the peninsula with eating space next to it) and lack of storage. It looks nice, at least on the pictures. I wouldn't do anything cosmetic, (including putting heavier countertops on older cabinets, or painting cabinets that from aestheticall point of view look fine and appropriate to the house..unless they're very worn and I can't see that, etc) until I'm in the house, maybe minimum half a year, studying how I want it to function, considering how layout can be changed(if you decide to go for it) and how it will impact the space as a whole. Changing the layout in 60's house..I don't know where the house is but here wouldn't be 20 K. Even with a small kitchen. Would be almost twice the cost. You touch walls, plumbing, electrical, you might need to abate asbestos, etc..drives the prices up, even if you keep the materials etc very reasonable. And it takes lot of careful planning, thought put into it, weighting pros and cons, your own preferences (say I'd be tempted to enclose the kitchen some, or move it a bit, to create the better sense of entrance, and increase storage..maybe I'd shorten it on the entrance door side, but encroach more toward the hallway so to say...I'd consider whether a pantry can be put in, or free-standing hutch would work better on the opposite side..I would give up seating there..and hundred other things) You will know all that better when living in the house. What bothers you the most, what bothers you the least..what are you ready to sacrifice and what you plan to gain. I'm waiting with interest to read other responses-there are some very talented people here, with better eye for layouts and spatial thinking than me..they might have great suggestions for you to consider. If you can upload even a simple plan with dimensions, that would be helpful too. If you want to paint meanwhile-your preferences will work nice with the kitchen as is. So you'll already feel more at home while thinking about bigger picture of a remodel....See Morejust bought a home.. any ideas?
Comments (1)Taupe, Gray and Sage colors go well with your brick tone. for the exterior. For the tall fireplace room, I would leave the brick, and maybe white wash it, I would also open up the catwalk area and put in railing, (classic mcm) I would do a whole wall of sliders that open rather than sky lights, and add more recessed For the railing I would do open treads, metal spindles and wood hand rails. ....See MoreI just bought a house and I need help with the kitchen remodeling.
Comments (8)Removing the wall with the clock on it doesn't get you anything really, aside from an open dining area. I agree with others that your goals are probably unrealistic for your budget. But hey, I'll play. Cooktops shouldn't be on islands for a number of reasons, but mainly safety and ventilation. People should not be able to reach the cooktop from the other side of it. It should be protected. People still put cooktops on islands, but they should have sufficient space behind it and sufficient ventilation above it (at least, if they're following good design). "move the fridge somewhere else"...where? You can't really remove that row of cabinets without having a place for all of it to go, and your kitchen isn't really big enough to move them all to the outside wall. But, OK, assuming an island. 10 feet with a 3.5' aisle (work) and a 4' aisle (to the basement) leaves you with 2.5' for the island. Maybe a sink fits on that, but it's tight. Seating definitely wouldn't. So you move your sink and DW to the island (relocating plumbing), move your range to the window wall and put the fridge on the end of that cabinet run, you may be able to do it. With a hefty budget. Hard to tell though without a measured layout....See Morecanopyecology
