First hydrangea, please explain color change

I just bought my first hydrangea - somehow it slipped past me that hydrangeas can be potted and grown in shade. I’m so excited to grow these flowers in my north facing front yard!

I’m seriously confused about the color change. I get the principal of soil acidity, but I still have a ridiculous question. I just adore the plants with mixed color, and I can’t seem to find clear instructions on how I would go about amending the soil for this result. I have considered a few possibilities: different soil acidity from previous season creates different colored flowers on old and new wood, a ph of exactly 6, different soil acidity in different parts of the bed, different soil acidity throughout the growing season . . .

Can anyone direct me to more detailed information on hydrangea soil?
