Is division really a legit method of propagation?

I feel like out of the rest of the methods of propagation(seed, cuttings, grafting, layering) division is somewhat a 'cheating' method of propagating since the plant already has roots and you're not creating any new life. It's also pretty much the same as transplanting in a way. I am trying to assemble a list of plants I've propagated and wondering if I should put a check mark off those I propagated by dividing. Here is my recently divided petasites japonicus Var giganteus and rubus phoenicolasius and my intentions are to increase the number of plants
