Can Amethyst Falls American Wisteria be planted near the house?

Hi. I just bought an Amethyst Falls American Wisteria in a 5 gallon pot. I have a small raised bed beside one of my porches that has a small pergola arch thing. Anyway i'd love to plant the wisteria there so i can train it on the pergola arch and along under the porch roof. I've read that the Asian varieties can cause damage, but the American variety is supposed to be much less aggressive. Is this true for the roots of the American variety as well? roots are kind of a concern because the porch and pergola in question is off of my kitchen, so there is a drain pipe maybe 4 feet away from the bed where I would plant it. I wonder if maybe I should put it in a giant ceramic pot, but would it survive winter in a pot?

The roots aren’t as much of an issue to my mind as planning to grow the vine on your home. Even the American ones can get to be large, heavy vines, and can do things like peel up shingles in looking for something to grab. It really is better on a heavy duty pergola or similar IMO.

Even there (on a free standing frame of adequate size and strength) regular pruning and training will be needed to not end up with a mess. Something that can happen quickly with vigorous kinds like wisterias.

After I posted this thread and did research I ran out and bought one about 18" high and 5/8" dia.in full bloom in a one gallon container for $32.50. Now for more research. I understand that it can be planted up to zone 4 in the ground but how about in a container??? What is the best type of soil for this plant as a bonsai?? If it is like the Asian plants should it be in a deep pot?? Etc., Etc.. Any info from anyone who has grown one as a bonsai will be appreciated??

I have had my "Amethyst Falls" for two years now. Mine is a rampant grower, (capable of covering an arbor in a season, but mine is in part sun, so it stretches a bit. It has been a wonderful bloomer. Though the rebloom has not been spectacular, if it was in full sun it might prove better for the flowering. I have not noticed any scent, pleasent or otherwise associated with this plant. I enjoy the spring show so much I have the vine in a prominent position right beside my front door. It is such a nice plant I don't even mind having the naked woody stems showing all winter. I have mine planted in the ground now, but will be digging it up so I can bring with me when I move, (otherwise it may cover surrounding trees if not pruned). ---Keith

Wisteria frutescens 'Amethyst Falls' is a good choice. I am attaching a link that should answer your questions. Wisteria frutescens (American wisteria) twines clockwise. I would replace the bamboo pole with a galvanized metal pipe, for long term durability, ASAP. Hope this will answer your questions. I have what has been ID'd as an Amethyst Falls and I've had no problem with them taking over. I have two vines that are growing up 20' wooden light posts. They haven't sent out runners or even made any seed pods. The branches that drag on the ground will root but are easy to pull up. It puts out foliage later then other varieties and starts blooming later. I think it's a prettier flower and it will continue to put out an occasional bloom throughout the summer after the first flush. I even get another mini flush in the fall. The only negative thing I've heard is that it has an unpleasant scent but mine has no smell at all. Karyn
