Need help with a living room update!

I'd like to get some new furniture for the living room. I currently have some hand me downs and need some ideas. Do you think a sectional would work in this space or should I go for sofas and chairs? I like neutral colors, but I need some color and personality too. Any other opinions would be appreciated.

You could at least remove the wood blinds and replace with fabric roman shades or curtain panels to add some softness. I would consider removing one of the wood shelves in the built in cabinets and putting your t.v. in the built in to keep all your focal points in one area. I also like the idea of painting or papering the back of the book cases. You can have foam board or thin mdf cut to size and paint or paper those to avoid doing anything permanent to the wood. Since there is so much warmth in the walls and flooring, I like the idea of using cooler colors to decorate as in the picture with blues and greens Holly posted above. It's really a beautiful space and the right furniture and decor will show it at its fullest potential.

Your cocktail table is really nice....consider using steel/wrought iron and stone end tables that blend with the cocktail table colors....lamps can be large and done in a accent color....art work, very big or multiples of two or three using about 2/3 wall space of sofa length....curtains can be is a smaller print with white and your accent color or possibly in colors that coordinate with the art work over the sofa....start with the end tables and lamps and art....good luck and best wishes or the new baby.

Very nice. I'm glad you went w/ your original layout. :) Love the floor lamps; I think I like first one the best for your space, but they are both nice, and they both work. Love the goat! So much fun. You could mix in a couple of velvets in your pillows, with whichever way you decide to go, neutral or color. Velvet works well with leather. And you could still do neutral in pillows, etc., even with colorful art if you want to. You don't have to necessarily pull colors from art for other decor, art can stand on its own. But you could also incorporate art colors if you would like to, of course. Your space is really looking great. Love your ideas and the direction you're going in. Below, a bit of Boho/Boho Chic. Very nice rooms. I don't have a wall color to suggest, but I would paint both rooms the same color (no feature wall). I'd consider a new coffee table, ceiling fixture, pillows, possibly new drapes in a color to compliment your rug and new wall color, a different chair cover once you decide on colors and a different DR table. To me, the FR looks crowded and somewhat cluttered. You have a lot of small items and too many items on your end tables, your table in front of the window (do you need this table?), your TV stand and your fireplace decor. You could also use larger art on your wall. The floor lamp in your DR, have you tried that between your sofas instead of the end table or by the upholstered chair by your desk rather than that end table? Keep us updated on your progress.

First reaction is not to want to look at the back of a sofa without a console table or something there...unless it is a superb specimen with a very attractive rear.

I would definitely go with transitional (not traditional) style based on your architecture. Add some art, color on walls, rugs. Lots of nice ideas on Photos on this site!

I think you should stick with the colors of your seating as you have now. I would rather you not have such an overstuffed recliner? but comfort often must come into play. your sofa from the back looks fine. from looking in your folder, i think you like pale blue and yellow. so perhaps we could softly bring some of those in. lighter tables would also be nice.

We say stick to a sofa and two chairs unless you don't want to see the fireplace or TV. A sectional in this room wouldn't work well. For pops of color consider adding blue or teal. Here are some of our designs to give you some ideas:
