I know that we all have different soil but what ratio of fertilizer do you use when you want more flowers?

I bought Osmocote last year that says "Flower and Vegetables" but when I look at the numbers on the back of the container, it shows 14-14-14. That seems like it should be for plants and grass.

Shouldn't the middle number be much higher (then the other two) for flowers?

~also for plants like Salvia Lucanthia or Spider Lillies and Crape Myrtle, do you use a fertilizer for flowers?

Hi Meme: I use osmocote when I pot plants up. Then I will use fish emulsion and alternate with miracle grow in the hose thing during bloom times. . I try to fertilize the flowering plants at least every other week. I maybe overrrrrr doing it some bu t with all the water that we have to use, I just think they are hungry.

Looking at the fertilizers that I already had but just re-found,

I have Miracle-Gro (for sprayer)-24-8-16 (for green plant growth)

Then I found Miracle-Gro Bloom Booster (for sprayer)15-30-15 (for more flowers)

I think I just answered my own question. The middle number should be higher for more blooms.

So that's why the Osmocote is not making my Snapdragons bloom but I have a lot of nice greens. I'm out of practice! LOL

(I'm so happy I can finally post a topic. IDK what they (HOUZZ) did but somebody fixed it for me and I can say "thank you" now too!)

I've got 25 lbs. of Lesco 18-0-3 from last year.....it was a 50 lb. bag and the guy at Site One told me what spreader setting to use......so I guess I only used 25 lbs. last November to winterize a 7500 sq. ft. lawn. Based on what you guys are saying, I didn't use enough last year and should use more this year?

I can't recommend it highly enough!! Different ferts for different plants is nonsense....virtually all plants consume nutrients in that ratio - 3 parts N to one part P and two parts K. And it matters not if they are flowering or fruiting - same ratio of consumption and utilization. There are some exceptions, notably a few plants of Australian origin that are P sensitive. btw, bloom booster fertilizers are pretty much worthless and more marketing gimmick than anything else. Plants cannot take up more nutrients than they actually need and if your ferts are already providing adequate P - which Foliage Pro does - then dumping on more P will not help them to bloom any heavier and can be counterproductive. I do use a couple of different ferts - actually more in the nature of amendments rather than a true fertilizer - for outdoor, inground plants but there is rarely a need to fertilize them at all.

I do not generally fertilize other than natural ones and even that not often. Like Ruth, I sometimes use fish emulsion in early spring. When I can find it, I like to toss a bit of alfalfa meal...but that has been at lest five years...I still hunt it, however. Last of all. I once tossed out osmocote. I can tell no difference in my plants with any of these..What I can tell is if they get dry, so I water in that case. According to Dan Trimmer, water is the best fertilizer and they need 1 to 1 and 1/2 inches per week. It costs a little, but if I buy the plants, I want to take care of them. kay

I have never understood the research and permutations gardeners go through to determine how and when to fertilize things like tomatoes. Or roses. Gardeners have been growing them successfully for decades before all that technical nonsense was available online. There is no need to reinvent the wheel :-)) If growing in containers in a soil-less mix, use a waters soluble fert with all necessary macro and micro nutrients like Dyna Gro's Foliage Pro or GROW. You have the option of fertilizing with every watering or weekly and the dosage is clearly spelled out. For plants growing in the ground, a dedicated tomato fertilizer, like Espoma's Tomato Tone or Dr. Earth's Tomato and Vegetable fertilizer, applied according to label directions, will supply all the necessary nutrients for healthy and productive growth.

Only a soil test on your site can tell for sure, but most of the widely available fertilizers are way too high nitrogen for anything but foliage plants unless you are gardening on sand. Most years I just need 0-10-20. for bulbs and flowering plants. Something similar is sold in small bags as expensive "potato fertilizer" but I just mix my own from generic bulk bags of triple phosphate and potassium sulfate.
