Rain Shower head advice

We are remodeling our smallish (6'x9'2") master bathroom. Replacing a tub with a large shower (40"x6'). We're planning a shower head and stick on a bar as well as a rain shower head. For the rain shower head we're debating a Hansgrohe Raindance vs. a Moen S6320 Velocity. I'd appreciate advice from anyone in choosing between them as well as advice on mounting. Should I be thinking ceiling mount (this is a 2nd floor so we can go above the ceiling into the attic, but it's not an insulated space - the pipe would have to be insulated) or wall mount for the rain shower head.

I can't speak to the Moen, but we researched a lot when we redid our master. Decided against the ceiling mount as we found that this Hansgrohe gave us the rain effect and the handheld with a rather simplistic installation. We get good flow and coverage from the shower head, and the fact that it tilts has been nice, both for control and for ease of wiping down the top. And of course, the handheld is paramount for many purposes, including rinsing down the shower.

Thank you. How close to the wall to you have to stand for the rain shower? My concern was that it seems to hug the wall? Might just be an artifact of the picture? Or does it tilt out? Do you have multiple flow options?

There was an enlightening discussion on this a while back so you should try doing a search. In general the gist of the comments was that a rain shower head experience is usually gentle and those with thick hair have difficulty rinsing shampoo and other hair products. Many, however, like the rain shower for the gentleness. In one shower that will be used by grubby children coming in from playing outside we have installed both a rain shower and a handshower in hopes that they will be enticed into getting cleaned up before they wander through the house. This will also probably be the dog shower. We haven't had a chance to use it yet as we are still waiting for our c.o. HTH.

You are right, that is the best solution-if you are going to mostly store the shower curtain inside the tub. I'm only going to be using this for an occasional shower at, if at all so the shower curtain will usually be hanging on the outside of the tub. Even I even keep it hanging; I may just have the contractor install the rod and skip the curtain for now. Can anyone who showers with a rain shower help me??? Does the water splash less towards the back wall???

We demolished and rebuilt our large shower in 2002, and the plumbing fixtures we put in were Hansgrohe (that was before Hansgrohe was bought out and became a Masco company.) We had a rainshower-style shower head. We have low-ish (not REALLY low, but fairly low) water pressure, and after seven years we decided last year that we wanted more vigorous showering. In searching for a replacement showerhead, we conducted very extensive and intensive research into our options, including purchasing, installing, and (up to the last) returning several showerheads from several different makers. The bottom line: you owe it to yourself to include the Moen Velocity 6320 in your plans. Accept no substitutes. You will see a lot of positive user reviews of the Moen Velocity on amazon.com and elsewhere; the positive reviews are true, based on our own experience. Returning to the style or function issue, the Moen Velocity is a rainshower-type head, but it is pretty heavy. Your articulating connecting arm had better be able to keep the head perky. We had to use a chrome-plated arm from Danze that does not match the brushed nickel/stainless steel plumbing fixtures that we have elsewhere in our bath. The performance of the Moen Velocity is very much worth the loss of style points from the mismatched finish in the arm. And (a bonus) Moen customer service really is customer SERVICE in these days that "service" seems to be more of a word than a concept. Encourage them.

Rain shower head drips when other heads are turned on. Ideas?

well, good idea but here's the problem - the faucet for the main shower head is just inside the shower door and I can turn that on and not get wet when the cold water comes down and wait for the water to warm up. But to turn on the rain shower head (or the hand shower - each water source has its own faucet), I have to be standing at the end of the shower where the three water sources are located - so I'd get doused with cold water turning on the rain shower head. In fact, even after the water coming out of the main shower head is warm, the rain shower spits out cold water at first. So what I've been doing when I can't stand being dripped on by cold water is endure a dousing in cold water in order to have those incessant drips be warm. Not a happy solution. It drips all the time once it starts. It doesn't start until a couple of minutes have elapsed. It drips even if I've not used the rain shower head in weeks (I tried not turning it on for awhile yet it dripped cold water on me daily). I guess I do have a diverter (sorry, I don't know all the technical lingo) - I know that I just inside the shower (imagine a long shower with the door at one end and the bathing area at the other end) I have a faucet that turns on the regular shower head. At the other end on the wall, there's the faucets for the rain shower head (on the right), the hand held (on the left) and to set the temperature for all of them (in the middle).

Kim, It does kind of look like that but no, you don't hug the wall at all. As the matter of fact you can turn sideways and elbows, nothing, ever touch the fixtures or wall. My husband is a tall person and even he finds it plenty roomy. The flow is such that it does project outwards a bit, and yes the tilt feature can help with that. Attaching another photo here. The furthest outward projection of the head itself is 26" from the wall. The control on the left side of the shelf panel (see 2nd pic) is for either overhead, hand shower, or both (as the hand shower can act like a body spray since, in it's cradle it projects outward). The flow is controlled by how far you turn the knob in the direction of whatever feature you are activating. On the hand held itself there are multiple flow options (gentle, strong, and pulsing). On the right side of the shelf is the temperature control.

We have the Hansgrohe e360 rain dance. We’re very pleased with it. We don’t feel too close to the wall at all. Our shower is 42 inches x 6’, so almost identical to your shower size.

Have you used a center mounted rain shower? If not - find a hotel and spend 2 nights.

The options above, have nice volume and enough angle that your head CAN stay out of the stream if you so desire.

I have. I would not want it as my only shower or even my only shower with a handheld. What I had envisioned was a normal shower head and a wand. Then also a ceiling mounted rain shower. But more folks seem to be doing rainshower heads on the side wall - ergo my ask.
