Best deck paint for old deck?
Comments (0)We are looking to paint our deck and not sure what paint brand to use. I haven't found one that has decent reviews. It's an older deck that has a quite a few chips and cracks on the boards. Someday we would like to replace the boards but right now that's not an option. Until we can fix the entire deck, we are looking to paint it to keep it in good shape. Right now there's no paint or seal on the deck. It looks like there was a stain on it ages ago but we power washed the deck when we moved in and everything came off....See MoreKeep grass and replace deck, or go all pea gravel?
Comments (20)We purchased a house with a wood deck in the front area and a composite deck in the back. I do not like composite at all! It is hotter than heck- I made the mistake of thinking I could run out and water quickly while barefoot and fried the bottom of my feet; now I worry about my dog's paws when I let her out after the sun has been hitting the composite. The wood doesn't seem to absorb the heat as much. We'll be replacing our composite. Pea gravel is mushy, hard to walk in and tracks into the house. We had a large area with it and I always thought decomposed granite would have been a nicer more stable cover. That said, my vote is for a real wood deck replacement or stone:). Good luck!...See MoreWhat color do I replace the barn red under the deck?
Comments (24)Thank you everyone. I do like the idea of trying to make the best out of a bad design with making the space under the deck usable. I work from home and my desk faces right out that window. Plenty of time spent daydreaming about a better view. Love the idea of a trellis to help mask those panels too. I think at this point I have no immediate plans to change the top of the deck. It sort of is what it is for at least a few more years. The red portion is much older wood and we have no choice but to keep it a solid color stain. I thought about trying to match it to the top but it’s hard to commit to more orange when I hate the orange. For the sake of not having too many colors I like the idea of staining the boards on the wall to match the house. Would the posts look weird with that same cream color? Especially under orange? Not sure. Since it’s going to be a solid color I would think we could go with any color, just maybe have to utilize a primer? Not sure how well solid stain color works. I think dark brown, charcoal or cream are what I’m leaning towards. Not crazy about any of it just trying to improve with what I have to work with....See MoreWalkout basement on front of house - remove or replace deck?
Comments (8)Since you know that deck has to go, there's no reason to leave it up and risk an accident. I'd take it down and clean everything up. Then I'd reassess. You can remove the dead deck this year and take fall, winter and spring to plan what happens next. That will give you plenty of time in all seasons to see whether you like not having a deck or whether it provided more than just cosmetic value. It will also allow you to visualize possibilities with less difficulty....See Morehandymac
