Ours is a straight foam mattress (no coils). It is a Leesa, which we bought in desperation when we couldn't find anything locally that we where comfortable purchasing. Turned out to be one of the best things we ever did. DH and I both weigh in the 160 pound range and have found it very, very comfortable. It sleeps a tad warm, but nothing like some memory foam mattress we've been on.

When we were mattress shopping on Maui, we tried out an adjustable King (2 XL Twins) at BedMart in Kahului. The adjustable feature was 'nice', but what we really liked was the way the mattress stayed 'up' (supportive) under the small of the back and under the knees. Of course now I can't remember the 'brand' or what it was made of, but it was some hybrid. I'm *thinking* the top was latex. (It was also about $10K with the adjustable frame, and we are not looking to pay that!) However, we might pay extra for a pair of XL Twins that we could use with some future adjustable frame.

Thanks, Idstarr -- I presume you mean your mattress is latex when you say 'foam'?

raven -- I took a quiz that suggested the Nest "Q-something" -- all latex. I think that and their "Alexander" hybrid are the same price. (I was thinking about you last week when I found three little rend 'dots' on the back of my neck just right of my spine...eek! Oh, please, no. Don't let it be shingles again! How are you coping?)

Ours is a coiless too, so much better. The mattress can be bought with 3 or 4 layers and you can decide what firmness you want for each layer. I have soft to medium firm on my side, my DH has firm on his. We love love love our latex bed. All you need is a platform type frame for it. No box springs.

Thanks, Brushworks. Do you have a latex mattress? Do you like it? Do they really last for 20 years without developing 'divots'? Does it matter whether the entire mattress is 'natural latex' -- or would only the top layer need to be 'pure'? (How 'pure' is necessary?)

I find that there is a Nest store in Chicago. We can 'try' the configurations before ordering online.

I've posted many times that I have a dunlop latex mattress that is 35 years old! It's a king size but I've slept solo in it for many years and have difficulty flipping it more than once a year now. It is truly like brand new, no divots, no compaction. I love that it's firm, but "gives" to make it comfy. It's just a slab of latex, with a cover. It's cool in summer and cozy in winter. No toxic chemicals.

I recently bought a latex mattress for my guest room. I could not find a locally available, organic latex mattress that could be delivered in time for the guest I was trying to accommodate with a better mattress than was in the room. I wanted to get it from Holy Lamb, but the 6-8 week wait was too long for this purchase. But they do sell an organic dunlop foam product, which would have been my preference.

After researching and having to eliminate some others that would have been first choices because of time constraints in delivery, I settled on a ZenHaven. It isn't organic, but "natural" - the product is the same but isn't certified for organic practices at the source of the sap. However, the foam is manufactured in the USA, the mattresses are also made here. It is talalay latex instead of dunlop, which, after reading their literature, I am ok with.

I loved their white glove delivery where they installed the mattress and hauled away the old one and the box spring. The new one only required a bunkie board instead of a box spring. The mattress has a softer side and firmer side (not side by side, but upper and lower sides). There is a 120 day guarantee of comfort. My guest just left and I have yet to sleep on it, but will before the 120 days are up. My guest could have used an even softer bed, but she is a princess. If they have an even softer latex topper, I may get that for her.

But stay away from artificial "latex" or memory foam. they are hot and toxic.

I think there's often confusion over latex and all the other foams our there, including memory. If a product isn't labeled natural latex, then it is another foam, period. And it will carry a (much?) higher price tag. My cousin bought a latex mattress last year and has had to get used to it, (too hard for her,) but after a topper was added says she sleeps fine, now. I think those of us who prefer latex are wanting to avoid the chemicals that go into the other mattresses. I hope you find a mattress that works well for you, Chisue.

Actually, the 'green' aspects are lovely, but I'm most anxious to find a comfortable mattress that doesn't sag after a month or two, as has been the case with our last two innersprings. Each ran almost $3K, for a pair of XL Twins that we use as a King.

We have had a pair of two-sided mattresses since our marriage over fifty years ago. We've been able to flip them ourselves, without hiring a strongman. Now we are getting too old for any flipping, but would like to have the option to buy separately controlled adjustable frames in the future. I presume you can 'fold' latex without damaging the mattress?

Olychic -- Thanks for reminding me of how long your latex mattress has served you. (Please hire someone to flip it before *it* outasts *you*.) From what I've read, I think a layered latex might work for us -- 'impure' on the bottom; 'pure-er' on the top layer. Seems there is no more 100% talalay anyway.

I wonder how these mattresses fell out of favor, or why they are making such a comeback. They are less expensive than most innersprings. A labor thing?

We’ve had our talaylay for over 5 years, no sagging either. The reason they are falling back into favor is because they are enviromentally friendly, easy to maintain and last forever. Personally, I don’t know why they ever fell out of favor except that maybe the gimmick of inner springs and pillow tops was more appealing when the fact is, they are junk.

Our first innerspring set was fine (1964 - 1974). Replacements from the same maker (Verlo, a small local manufacturer) have been unsatisfactory every since.

We tried Sealey/Simmons/S-something that sagged within a week, and the store took it back. Our present pair of XL twins from Verlo haven't lasted well at all. We even tried having them 'refurbished'. These have all been close to $3K. We haven't gotten heavier -- they just *sag* under the pelvis. I'm done!

So I have been following along because we need a new mattress too. And I have a question about the frames. If you don’t ‘need’ an innerspring with these latex mattresses, what do you do about your existing bed?

Our bed has a headboard and footboard with slats. We have always had to buy a low-profile innerspring mattress (once the mattresses got so thick). I was looking at a couple of the websites and it appears they just sit on a frame. How does that integrate with an existing bed and frame?

Considering the Nest or the Zenhaven at present. Still open. We would like to try one out.

Our bed is the same as yours, it’s a bed with a head board, a foot board and slat. Our mattress sits on the slats. It’s got drawers under it like a captains bed though so the height of the mattress is a traditional height. SleepEz, where we bought our mattress from sells bases that are wooden slat frames covered in fabric if the additional height is needed. They also sell adjustable bed frames.

The slat system is designed for personal comfort. If you're going to have multiple guests, then an adjustable could prove uncomfortable since it has personalized settings.

Wow! That’s quite a system Brushworks! Did you purchase that separately from your mattress or was it part of a package from o e vendor? I guess I still have homework to do.

Got ours at Design Sleep, Yellow Springs, OH. Our mattress is 100% latex base and topper and the slat system is the foundation offered by the same store.

If you buy from store, they take about an hour with you to make the initial adjustments according to your body and your sleep positions. If your body changes over time, they can offer you adjustment numbers over the phone or email.
