It's a hornworm that's parasitized by wasps. Put it back in the garden. It wont be eating anything else. If you destroyed it you also destroyed next years wasps that would do the same to next years worms.

Strayer: Funny that you should bring this up because we *just* ( as in yesterday) decided to replace our Valet Intercom system instead of ripping it out. It took us weeks of agonizing, lol! My first instinct was to remove it ( we have the units upstairs as well) but our neighbors( and close friends) replaced their identical units with 'prettier' models and of course, DH wanted to do the same. Assuming its in a wall, it looks a lot like the clay fitting I have in my wall for my boiler vent to attach to the masonry chimney. In my case there is a square cavity behind it, made of clay tile, which then extends up and connects to the chimney. Bruce

No direct sun. In almost all cases it looks like a pattern across the leaves... almost doesn't look organic. I would actually agree it looks like some sun through some blinds for a long time but that's not the case. Super weird :(
