Comments (27)I am reading this thread and working on a porch ceiling too. I like this color and would love to know what is shown in the photo and what stain she decided to go with!! Any answers? The wood is pine and I’m leaning towards Golden Oak or possibly Mountain Ash by SW for a hint of gray. Let me know if anyone has suggestions!! Comments (15)Agree with ( ) with one possible exception: Know what kinds of plants you have and manage their upkeep in the best interest of the plants. It may, in fact, be that you want to let the shrubs /trees grow for privacy above the fence and eventually be able to cut the lower limbs so they're not touching/scrapping against the fence or holding moisture against it, especially for when you might actually need to repaint them. If you ever do repaint the fence, don't choose white -- go with a color that is found in the natural woods -- a "nature" color such as another cedar or redwood or brown wood or even a dark green to mimic the greenery around the pool. Even some shade of a gray would be better than white or blue. Then, too, there are paints that are intended to look like wood grain (but I've never used one so cannot recommend for or against the use of them. Do protect and keep the solid fence as long as possible. Privacy is liberating rather than suffocating -- and I'm not talking about nude bathing either ... just being able to relax without a nosy neighbor counting your guests or watching you add sunscreen or trying to lip read or having to clean up after their pets that squeeze thru the fence -- or having their kids seeing the water and becoming envious enough and/or bold enough to do something dangerous. White furniture would go well with the blue pool but it might look dirtier more quickly....See MoreHelp! What color do I paint my house. Also should I stain the rock or

Comments (37)The last two fences we've built have been good neighbor fences, where there is no good or bad side. The cost wasn't much more than a standard fence, so that's worth doing if you don't plan to follow the basic "good side faces the neighbor" etiquette. We have one that the neighboring building's HOA built and paid for where the bad side faces us, but we didn't really care because they paid for it. (In California the law expects that each neighbor pays 50% of the cost, so that's unusual.) I will say I was still pretty annoyed when they replaced that fence because we live in an urban area and went to let our dog out one day only to discover that we no longer had a fenced backyard (and wouldn't for the next three days). Sure, it was great that we didn't have to pay, but basic courtesy (and in our case, local law!) says you still need to give people a heads up. I would definitely consider building it on the property line rather than fully on your property, though. Even if the neighbor is aware that the slice of land on the opposite side of the fence is technically yours, they're likely to absorb it into their yard in practice because there's a fence there, and a future neighbor might not be aware since most places the practice is to put the fence on the property line. You are also responsible for maintaining both sides of the fence (and the section of yard on the other side) if it's in your yard, too, whereas if you put it on the line, they maintain their side. Is there a compelling reason not to build it there?...See MoreRelated Professionals
