Has anyone worked with Neem Oil?
Comments (9)Donna = I second Alenka - you dispose of the old solution and make a new batch. In my experience Neem oil is a very good preventative. If your PM is rampant you need to do something else. -Fung Away seems good enough. Lysol spray is a preventative too. If your PM is in a very beginning - you need to spray all you collection once a week with Neem - and I used anti-lice shampoo instead of dish soap. I sprayed without taking the plants off the shelves - my theory was that PM spores usually land on the top of the leaves. There are some varieties - PM magnets - that catch it first - and spread it to the other plants. You need to treat them aggressively - or get rid of them alltogether. Comments (21)Even a new shipment of rare plants that I potted up today at the Huntington had mold growing on them. This time of the year I am finding mold. Haworthia, from my experience of growing them for the past 30 years, I noticed in hot weather even in Africa they shut down part of the year for about 3 months, they shed the old roots, which will become their fertilizer. I take a plant out of the soil when it does this which is now, law it on it's side on the top of the soil, and wait until I see the new roots growing, then replant it in fresh dry soil, and wait about two weeks before or longer before I start to water again. At that time I take off the dead roots, leaves and while upside down inspect for scale, use Windex, mealies, and wash with soap and water. This works for me, it may not work for you, I also add diatomaceous earth agg. quality that the mealies cannot live in, get it at a nursery. This information is not meant to start a war here, the lady is asking for help. Norma...See MoreHelp! How can I kill scale without using more neem oil?
Comments (38)Gardengal, I have known you for years and in fact you and I have had the same mentor to get to where we are! We have a history here, on the Hoya, Cactus, Containers, Rose, Fragrant, Houseplant, and many other forums! Please, for what it's worth, there are members here that far surpass the "mules" as you say that REALLY appreciate the gifts you have to offer including me, I do, and a whole handful that have been nothing but kind and eager to learn, not to mention any names. I agree, there are at time mules here, but then so too at the Cactus Forums and others, a reason why I stopped posting there for a while and many other forums. Promised myself I was not going to give myself that lost opportunity to help others despite what a slight handful might act like or say and that is why I am posting up a storm there again....One thing I did promise myself is that I will never stop being kind or helping those of the general population here or any other place in which the majority far outweigh the few. You and I go way back and I know as you know I do that there are many innocent good hearted ones that watch us through closed doors, hang around but never post, lurk, and even post that truly appreciate all that we do and share. As a plea to you, please don't leave here for the sake of a few, but continue to be a gem here on this forum and the many others that you have made a huge impact on, including on what I know. Sounds good? You of all people I believe will not disappoint nor the many others that truly have a soft spot for you, me just as our mentor Al have never. You and I know he never gives up on the many that DO appreciate good help that many need to know. From Me to you, one member here that has always respected and appreciated your offerings. Comments (3)Also, I read in here to keep it out of direct or strong light. While its being treated and for a few weeks after the treatment has been washed off. Something like that. I'll see if I can find it and copy/paste into this thread. If it works this is the link..... https://www.gardenweb.com/discussions/5274650/help-used-neem-oil-to-treat-succulents-they-seem-to-be-dying-now And the bit about keeping out of the light.... methodically as Rina mentions, then 3-4 applications of the right pesticide (alcohol or whatever) is typically enough to completely wipe out infestations. 2 Likes Save Thanked by Yulia (PNW, zone 8) Pagan(7) Yesterday at 3:39AM I can not stress enough how plants MUST be out of any light for at least a week after spraying with neem. I have used it even on mesembs but they were kept in a dark room away from windows and under a table afterwards. If you feel you must spray again, wait 7 days (this is how I space my applications, sometimes I do three because I'm paranoid). That's a total of 3 weeks that they are in deep shade. After the treatment, I flush the plants with water just because it makes me feel better when I reintroduce them to light. THen, here's the annoying part--I dab them with tissue paper to wick the water out of the rosettes, especially the center. Kevin is right about eggs. You can try commercially available predator mites or bacteria but they are tricky to use. Also, there are plants, especially the kind with powdery stuff on them whose name I can't remember before my morning coffee, that should not be treated with neem. Most thin-leaved succulents (that are really barely succulent), I also would not neem, like aeoniums and certain crassulas. Major cool points to you for trying neem first though, Yulia. That's not to say don't ever ever use chemical pesticides---sometimes they're the only options left. Just be careful with yourself, your plants and all the other creatures around that you don't want to maim or kill with such poisons. Being a coward about such things, I usually just throw my infested plants away first--in a bag, after soaking in soapy water for days lol I've had one adenium survive this pre-garbage treatment before. African violets, not so much. So I quit African violets. Too annoying....See MorePagan
