Very timely thread for me. I'm trying to decide on which size subway tile as well. To mix things up I'm considering a narrower and longer size (2 3/8 x 7/12) or a wider and longer size (4x8 or 4x12). Is there any design guidance on how to decide between one size or the other? For example (I don't know, I'm making this up) the smaller, longer tiles look great in modern kitchens or the wider, longer tiles look best in kitchens with no uppers. Can those who picked subway tile backsplashes explain why they picked the size they did?

Back in the day when I used tie-back ruffled priscillas, I usually bought 63" length for bedrooms even tho my windows were about 42 inches long because (1) they were cheaper, and (2)I did not care that they were not floor length because my bedrooms are so small, there was usually a piece of furniture or part of the bed under the window. I actually preferred that length for tie-backs, which made them fall about halfway between the bottom of window and floor. I have never liked curtains the same length as my window, except over a sink. In my living/dining areas I usually went with floor length in this style (does anyone remember the Dorothy's Ruffled Originals). That was me. Now I prefer panels, shirred to the side, covering very little of the window, hanging to the floor (not puddling). Like Greywings said, it is just whatever you prefer. Tuesday

mags: Now that the floor is almost done I'm finding that the color variation isn't bothering me like it was when it was just a strip of flooring. It's uniformly, randomly varied now if that makes any sense. The floor guy is now slicing them on a straight edge so at least as the floor progresses into the kitchen, he'll be starting even. romy: Oh, you are so nice to say that...thank you and please, continue to play along... (Hopefully they'll be of the "I love my ....." instead of " AAHHHHH", type.) raee: It's understandable how that would work with vinyl... I wonder. Maybe we can set the boxes by the heat vent... it certainly would hurt them at all. What you explained about the sanding and finish coat is exactly what the floor guy suggests doing for exactly the reason you outlined. He thought sanding down some of the leftover tiles into dust and then sweeping that into the cracks with a poly overcoat would be the way to go. So, we're going to do that as I really don't want to risk water getting between the tiles and blahdeblah. As I said above the more tiles that get laid, the less the variation bothers me. I'm really liking the floor a lot and this size thing oughta get us a nice reduction in our entry floor cost, so yeah, win win.
